Although after driving it, I had to loosen probably 5-10 degrees, so that it it would return to center (still with a little help) and there is a small clunk that came back with that adjustment. So I’ll try a new guide and spring to see if that fixes it completely.

 

How heavy is your truck? Of all things California does I'm surprised they don't have GVWR inspections. Keeping your truck light will more than likely save you money in the long run from cracks on structural components of the truck. Not to mention fuel costs. If you put em on make sure to paint them red to add some HP.

If you go with the Daystar kit build your own bed mounts. The body mounts have been solid for me the last 5 years.

 

Does anyone know the actual size for the hex on the steering rack guide cap, I cannot find it.

 

I don't know it off the top of my head. But there is a Youtube vid of a Russian (i think) dude that rebuilds a rack. I think he said it in the video.

I know, it's not real specific, but it's all I got lol



EDIT @timmah has his video where he replaces a rack guide. I'll bet he says the size.

 

Yeah I was just trying to find something better, I had a 3/4” coupler that I had laying around that I grinded down. It works bu definitely isn’t the best. I did see some one say a 5/8” nut fits well, so may just grab 2 and weld them together. I Also seen One picture of a 24mm hex bit. But I can’t seem to find that in a cheap option or in 1/2”

 

I use a coupling nut from home depot.

that coupler idea is definitely a cheaper solution

Be wary of over tightening it though, too much and the steering gets super tight. I can't remember the torque spec off the top of my head but it's pretty low. I overdid it the first time and the wheel wouldn't return on it's own after turning a corner.

 

Oh yeah I over tightened it and it was sketch haha, the adjustments are interesting. Torque specs is 18 ft lbs and then back it off 19 degrees, so I went to 18 ft lbs and then tried it and was way to tight. Backed it off like 10 degrees, it’s tight but much better. Going to rock with that for now since I ordered a new guide and spring.

 

I lift the front of the truck off the ground and adjust it until I start feeling a little bit of tension in the steering wheel.

 

Took Tina for her 200,000 birthday trip up to Montana, stopped at badlands NP, Rushmore, Theodore Roosevelt NP, glacier NP, flathead NF, and a few other places. Awesome places, beautiful mountains. I know I've said it before, but I miss being able to take a short drive and be in real mountains.

The day Tina turned 200,000 she got to help yet another mountain folk out of the snow. Not sure what's up with you mountain folk and getting stuck in snow. On a serious note, the driver was lucky I was camped a short walk down the road. The car had a couple of inches before it would've been a very expensive lesson, the picture doesn't show how precarious it was. I was planning on heading to the end of the road the previous day, but turned back due to the wet, deep snow and being solo with the wife, but the Subaru thought better... I basically had to winch it sideways from a tree with a snatch block, alternating from front to back. A few folks on ATVs and a Jeep came along and helped as well. I wish I got more pictures, but was focused on the whole safety thing.

Anyway, had a great time in the mountains. Hopefully next year we'll be back to do some exploring in the more secluded NFs. It was our first time in Montana and being 2,000 some miles out solo we kept it safe....ish

 

Today I just replaced the original sealed beam headlights for some LEDs. I installed a glass 7x6 H4 retrofit housing and put in some H4 LED bulbs. Very bright compared to the originals.

 

Sadly that's the best the west has to offer. I wouldn't go looking elsewhere
