i have been in this career field for 24 years now- all gasoline is the same basically- and all gasoline has a certain amount of additive whether it’s a cheapo station or Chevron, but the big name stations have better proprietary additives. So it does make a difference. In California i can tell you that even cheap gas has way more additives than the gas in say, Texas or Midwest. Its just our ridiculous requirements here. From my knowledge, Chevron techron is the best additive out there. Shell being pretty much on par with Chevron.
And yeah, as a pipeline operator its pretty cool how we move and seperate batches in the line. For instance, there’ll be a 5000 barrel batch of Reg Carb gasoline, followed by a 5000 barrel batch of Carb diesel, followed by a 50,000 barrel batch of Jet-A. We ship it out of the refinery at about 100 degrees, then the incoming terminal, such as Kinder Morgan, will see have meters which will give you a barrel count on when to anticipate a “batch change”. The operator would go out and watch a hydrometer, and as the interface comes through, they’ll see a big gravity swing if it’s different products, or minute gravity change if its premium vs regular. Once you see that first change you input that barrel count number into a computer, and once it hits a line fill to transmix tank, the remote valves will swing that interface into a transmix tank (slop tank) Until the desired gravity is reached, then that barrel count will be entered and as soon as the computer sees that number, it will swing the valves again into the desired product tank. Typically, on a differing product batch change, the interface that gets trashed is anywhere from 200-500 barrels (8400-21000 gallons) which is crazy, but then that transmix is loaded from the terminal, taken right back to the refinery and it is run through again and made right back into good product. Its a fun job for the most part. I got into it in the usaf. Now im a dispatcher working in a control center for a major refinery and managing and shipping hundreds of thousands of barrels of finished product out by pipeline, marine vessel, tank trucks, or rail cars daily. Its a staggering amount of product and money. Let me just say- none of these oil companies are losing money despite how they cry. Quite the opposite

Obviously when in remote regions, like west Texas, there is only one refinery in the area and all brands get their gasoline from that one refinery. All they do is add their own additive package to the tanker when they fill up. Way back (I'm 78) it was more common to have a fuel filter clog up due to dirty gasoline. If I was on a road trip and started getting symptoms of a clogged filter, I would pull into what is now known as a top tier gasoline provider and fill the tank with their premium gasoline. This would always dissolve enough of the crud in the fuel filter, improving the drivability, that I could make it home.
I agree the "non-branded" stations probably just get the cheapest fuel they can find, obviously without a good additive package. Thus causing the vehicle manufacturers to put fuel provider recommendations in their owner's manuals.

Yes. Several years ago I bought my wife a diesel station wagon. I thought it was the best driving car we ever had; she hated it and accidentally ran over large debris on the highway with it. After a rather large hit with half a tire I removed the front bumper and took it to the Mercedes body shop to paint. In my head this would also give them incentive to do it properly and bake the part in the booth versus a quick spray by a new tech in the lot. Also, no charge for removal/installation and no issues with marring up surrounding parts by someone that did not care.

For unrelated reasons, about a year and a half later I traded it in on a new 4Runner. I stand by the diesel torque making it one of the best driving cars that we owned...

Angle of picture. Its not short, but it is a few inches shorter than a trd pro skid i think. Im not sure. The greenlane skid has bends in it unlike the trd pro slid so it looks alot smaller but it actually isnt much. The greenlane is wider so thats part of why it appears smaller.
I love mine- its pretty light and offers just the amount of protection i need. I basically just need it to deflect racoons and Berkeley hippies from damaging my truck components when i drive over them, and it does a great job.
