    Sort of similar story.

I was in a Maintenance Company at NTC (Ft. Irwin) as my permanent duty station (1986 - 88). We had mostly M60 tanks, but also a few Viet Nam era M551 Sheridans, to help play the "OpFor" (Warsaw Pact opposing forces) against visiting armor and infantry units. Probably still the same routing today.... So, at some point in 1987, a shiny new M1 Abrams (first gen) was brought to NTC to see how it would do in a desert environment. It suffered training damage of some sort to either the reactive armor, or an engine exhaust baffle.... something. I don't recall now, but it was basically cosmetic, the tank was still fully functional. So it was driven to one of our M60 work bays to be inspected, evaluated by the manufacturer, etc. to fully assess the extent of the damage, how well had it performed, all that good shit.

But in 1987 it was still not even full issue, it was still in very early adoption. So, to keep us peons from getting anywhere near it, or maybe catch a glimpse of any of it's super secret goodies, they had armed guards - and not MP's either, surrounding the entire bay are for quite a distance around it, for several days, until the big wigs were satisfied with whatever they were doing with it, and took it away to be repaired. We obviously could see it, but from about 150 yards away. Still pretty neat for back then.

So...I got to experience this landing a couple of times actually going into Sarajevo. I didn't realize that it became its own thing. For a passenger in a C-130, it's better than any roller coaster and you don't have to stand in line for an hour (just sit for 4 waiting for your chalk to load).

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
Here is my favorite - the one(s) that got me home safe from the 35+ combat missions I flew on them down in the Vietnam/ Laos/ Northern Gulf of Tonkin Regions. Great planes - 62-4131, 32, 34, 35, 38, and 39 all of which are still flying the same type of missions today after 50+ years
What they looked like when I flew on them: [IMG]

Now what they look like -- this is the same plane as in the above photo with a "few" updates

If you read Jack Carr books then you’ll be interested in the making of his book “Terminal List” into an eight episode show that’s now streaming on Amazon Prime video.

Just finished the series and just like every other adaptation there are changes from the book but the story survives.
