5vzfe RPM While Cranking Help

I am trying to diagnose a crank no start/no spark on a 3.4 swap I'm doing right now. Can anyone tell me if my scan tool should be registering RPM while cranking? I also have a P0110 code. I'm gonna try a different AFM tomorrow but from what I've read that code shouldn't prevent spark right?

 

Yes, you should see RPM while cranking, if not either your scanner is not communicating properly or the PCM isn't seeing an RPM input.

No the P0110 will not disable spark or cause a no start, it is for the intake air temperature sensor being out of range but won't cause a no start.

What kind of swap are we talking about here, just replacing the engine with the same year and size engine or are we talking something different?

 

Thanks for the response. I'm swapping a manual 3.4 into a 1988 4runner that was originally a manual 3.0. The ECU and wire harness I'm using are from a manual 4x4 99 tacoma 5vzfe and I'm using an ORS adapter harness. Everything is brand new, every sensor, every gasket, everything. Today I'm going to check the crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor and try a different igniter module and make sure its grounded well, maybe try a different maf. I have power, I have fuel, I just don't have spark. I know this has been asked a million times. I'm reading a million posts lol. If you have any ideas I'll try anything.

 

Only code I'm getting is a p0110, but I noticed that my scanner isn't seeing RPM while cranking. It's not the best scanner but it's a snap on Ethos edge and I've never had problems with it.

 

If you aren't seeing RPM the crank sensor is definitely the starting point, checking wiring to the igniter is a good call too since that generates the tach signal.

That's a tough one, so many variables with a swap like that.
If you have access to a scope I would want to look at the cam and crank signals at the PCM first of all and see if they are good.

It's quite nice, I haven't used prodemand though so I'm not sure how similar they are. I use the hell out of the wiring diagrams, but the mechanical bulletins and breakdowns are solid too.

 

I unfortunately don't have a scope yet, it's on the list of things I need for sure though. I'll try to see if I can borrow one from someone here locally. It would definitely make this easier.

 

Yeah the problem I have with prodemands wiring diagrams is that they are page by page, so it's almost impossible to correlate without printing physical paper and lining them up.

 

Unless you have a wide monitor you can only reasonably fit one page on alldata too. I find myself printing things

 

We have Prodemand too, the problem with their wiring diagrams is they are redrawn and tend to have alot of errors.
Sometimes if you dig around under the service manual section you can find OE wiring diagrams.

 

Okay so I have 2 crank position sensors handy. One new and one used. Both are within ohm spec. One thing I am considering is that I may have wired the connector with incorrect polarity. I'm not sure if that would matter but I'm gonna flip them around and see. The connection on my harness was bad so we "fixed" it. I'm about to try again. I also tried a different ignition module froma good running truck and still no RPM on scanner or spark.

 

Just reversed the polarity and we have sparkkkkkkkkk!!!!
