I just dropped off my '17 white taco that had paint failure issues around the rear right passenger window, rear left passenger window, and starting above the windshield for Toyota-approved repaint. I had to make noise with the dealer for several years...I first noticed the common flaw on the rear right passenger vertical window sill about two years after buying the truck. I finally got the dealer to take pictures and file a claim back in January and then again in April of this year because the dealer dropped the ball and never submitted the claim the first time. The repaint was ultimately authorized by Toyota the same day the claim was submitted...Toyota is aware of the issue and are instantly approving claims according to my dealer. It just takes a lot of persistence. Very frustrating experience over all, and now I am without my truck for 3-4 weeks due to the back log of repaint jobs in the queue. Toyota is paying for a rental vehicle though.

    Me too.
To be clear, it's not a complete vehicle repaint. Just a repair, repaint, and blending around the problem areas. Hopefully it will last...at least long enough for me to sell it...LOL

There's no clear coat its a single stage paint so the clear is mixed in with the white. Thats why you notice some of the older toyotas that weren't washed and waxed regularly tend to get chalky looking.

I should be getting my 17 back any day now after Toyota fixing the problem areas. For me it was around both rear doors and both front fenders.

I actually had to go to corporate via the Toyota website to get the dealership to do something about it. Once Toyota reached out to the dealerships customer relations team, they covered all the work and a loaner. Like someone mentioned before it's not a full repaint but just fix/blend.

It's not too late for some of us, my truck as 80k+ miles on it.

I’ve seen them. They look bad. So if you wax regularly it’ll be fine?

Got my truck back today, Dealer's collision center painted both rear doors and fenders. They didn't use the crappy single stage paint and the painted parts blend well with the rest of the cab.

Hound your dealerships if you're having paint chipping issues and if they don't react, reach out to Toyota and list your dealership in the service request.

Someone on Reddit is claiming that in 2019 Toyota’s formula / vendor for the white paint was changed. Does anyone have any insight into this? Is this true?

    Can you post a link?

Going back through this thread, I only found one post of an issue with a 2019+ model. Most are 2016s and 17's which makes sense as it seems to take 4+ years for the issue to surface.

So maybe? Seems plausible, but also possible that 2019s haven't been on the road long enough to see a large enough sample size of the issue.

Received a call back after submitting for the Good Will program. Toyota refused to cover the $650 estimate. When I asked the corporate customer service agent why some were getting approved and what standard they were using to establish who gets covered and who doesn't, he told me it had to do with "various factors" that included brand loyalty.

If this helps it was brand engagement that got the good will approval. My quote was far higher than yours too.
