Flipping through the last few pages, I was really rooting for Jake to fall into some weird/dark Nickelback and Creed kick.

Guess we'll have to wait until next time

I've only been in COS for a few years so hardly an expert, but I guess it's better than nothing...

I'll second @ColoradoTJ 's assessment of Old Stage Road. It's a nice, scenic drive but it can get crowded and not everyone there has the best manners. There are a few informal shooting ranges (the that are strewn with old TVs and other garbage) back there that bum me out. Please be kind to the land and everyone using it while you visit.

For anther non-technical scenic drive, you could make a loop including Phantom Canyon Road and Shelf Road between Cripple Creek and Canyon City. Both are fairly well-maintained, although parts of Shelf Road will be more comfortable with 4WD, especially if traveling uphill (from south to north).

There are several surplus stores in town that look legit, but I haven't been inside any of them. I've seen stacks of ammo cans for sale outside https://koscovemetal.com on occasion, but not sure if they have any currently.

I highly recommend Monse's Pupuseria and Maco's Tacos (taco truck) for food.

Hell, that’s a great suggestion. Phantom Canyon Rd (gold belt tour) was fun in our 4R’er. Fall colors is amazing. This was last year:

Just an FYI, shooting off Old Stage Rd for the first 18 miles is no longer permitted and fines have been handed out (for the out of state visitor’s).

If shooting is a favorite pastime, there is an outdoor range off north 67 out of woodland park. There’s some decent 300+ yd ranges if you wanna get the longer range toys out.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I'm not sure how much time we'll have during the week, gf's sister wants to take us to Denver, my parents made plans for Pike's Peak cog railway, but I think I may have to do Phantom Canyon road at the very least!:thumbsup:

I figure Fort Carson being so close would mean there'd be real surplus in the area. Mainly just looking for stuff like helmet lights, maybe a salty old pair of comtac headsets to refit, medium/tall size gear to fit my slenderman/battle gumby frame...:D

It had to be done. There were spots that started to look like Beirut the morning after.

Further up in the article, camped at 11.7k feet.

“They had no extra clothing and no way to stay dry in their tent, with no rain fly. These hikers said they did not understand why it was so cold and rainy in Colorado, because it has been ‘so hot in Texas’ where they hike all the time.”

Ummm, you're not in Texas anymore Toto.

    Wow.

Considering Special Forces trains on those mountain ranges…

I can’t remember how many people/dogs our off-roading group have assisted on the decent from Lake Como. We always stop and offer water or rides. Most hikers are at least nice. Some just hate that vehicles are on that road. Two years ago I had to talk this guy into helping his family out. His dogs pads were really tore up from the rocks and was carrying her like a shepherd (along with his rather large pack). His wife sprained her ankle and was hobbling along. He refused but his wife was all in. We waited at their vehicle at the bottom until he arrived.

If you've got the vehicle for it, the obstacles certainly looked like they could be fun. But yeah, the 'baby head' rocks on he road are notorious for rolling ankles. Was up there in April 2017 climbing some of the peaks, and was actually glad to be wearing the full shank high ankle mountaineering boots on the lower parts of the approach for once.

There is one pretty much right outside the gate. It has decent gear: https://goo.gl/maps/djCTEBT6XujKxv7fA Got my modular sleeping bag from here: https://goo.gl/maps/sbTtrHp9oZyLsC1p8 those are the only two I've been two. But a google search pops up alot more. And this being a military I'd expect most of the others to be legit.

Rampart Range Road is a quick trail you can run after driving through Garden of the Gods.

Oil change day, both trucks. It's freaking hot as balls out there. I didn't change either one last year and not sure how long it's been. So it was time.
Turns out dealer oil is cheaper than chain store oil and no anxiety about trying to remember what brand you buy.

Steering rack is leaking oil into the boots. That sucks ass. Prolly wait till late fall to sweat that one out and refresh the front end at the same time. No pics of the boot cause it's depressing.

and picked up a new hat just because.

I never bothered to look. Would prolly not match the 26 year old faded paint anyway.
