3rd gen regear?

Okay I’ve got a 2022 Tacoma v6 auto and I hate it! It is constantly shifting gears while cruising down the road. Hell, a semi passes me and it’s bow wave causes it to downshift on a flat road! It seems the only consistent time it’s in 6th is going downhill with a tailwind. I’ve got stock 265 tires, is the only fix regearing? I’m going to have to fix it or trade it because I can’t live with it as is. If regearing is the answer are the any Toyota specialty shops in the Midwest or are they all out west? Thanks.

 

My personal recommendation is to drive with the ect button always on. If that still doesn't work for you there are tunes you can buy that are well reviewed on this site. Also toyota has a ecm update service bulletin that helps with this issue.

Edit, how many miles are on it? the ecm has a "learning" period were it adjusts to your driving style. Its gets way better after a few thousand miles.

 

Did you not test drive before you bought it?

Aside from that, either tune it or regear.

 

1200 miles, tried ect and no joy, I spent the $400 on kdmax xt last week and while helping off the line and stopping the 1,2,3,4,3,4,5 shifting I’d did nothing for flat road 5th gear driving on anything but downhill or tailwind.

 

Sure I did for 30 minutes but our Toyota dealership is on two lane highway with no interstate for 30 plus miles. Around town this thing is great, but as I live on 4 lane highway and drive 30mile one way to work this thing is driving me mad.

 

Don't know mine holds 6 on the highway pretty consistently and I'm on 33s(no tune or regear). Are you at high altitude or something?

 

You should look into East Coast Gear Supply, you can get a prebuild 3rd member for the rear diff, and a prebuilt front diff with the desired gear ratio. You can also add a locker if you want. Swapping a third member and the front diff isn't too hard, and you send the stock ones back to ECGS as cores. When I was trying to price out a regear this seemed the most economical option.

 

get hills or wind then its a no go, flat ground though, ya it does better than I would expect from reading post on TW about it.

 

Sell it, move on, you’ll never be happy with it.

I'm with you here. I drove my 2016 from Stillwater, OK to Flagstaff, AZ in a single sitting. It was on 31.5" Wildpeaks, and had a CVT RTT on a mid height rack on the back.

I was in D with no ECT the entire time, and it was very easy to drive.

Don't take this the wrong way bud, but did you not test drive it? This is a very well known issue with the 3rd gens. While yes, you shouldn't have to do shit to a brand new truck to get it to drive properly, it is common knowledge the auto transmission tune sucks.

Try getting your truck tuned before you trade it in. If you absolutely hate it, I guess you could try regearing it. Or just go trade it in for a clean 2.5 gen

 

What is a 2.5 gen?

 

Ha fair question. It's a 2nd gen built between 2012 and 2014. Creme de la creme of Tacomas. Often imitated, never duplicated.

 

Gen2 = 05-15 model years
Gen2.5 = 12-12 model years

The 4wd v6 and prerunner models have 3.73 gears. Doesnt matter Gen2 or Gen2.5. It was cosmetic differences with minor changes.

I’ve tried it for 30 miles with both ect on and off today and anything other than dead flat it shifts back and forth. My house is at 515’ and work at 495’ 30 miles later it’s very flat here with the slightest of undulations. I’ve got the trd pro 265 70r16 tires aired up to 36 lbs. I had a 90 4cyl on 31 10.50 15” that was a lot more pleasurable to drive than this one although it was a manual.I’m just looking for solutions before I trade it off. It’s sad I waited 7 months for this one to be built.

 

Haha didn't know about the 2nd gen gear ratios. As somebody who owned a 2019 before picking up my 2014, I'd have guessed my 2014 had a 4.30 ratio or something. Way more responsive than the 3rd gen

 

Gen2/2.5 6cyl trucks had 3.73 gears.
Gen2/2.5 4cyl trucks had 4.10 gears.
