UPDATE 10/20/2024: STILL AVAILABLE-Compass Temp Homelink Mirrors for 2009-2015 Tacomas & more

Thanks for taking the time to provide such a detailed answer. While the compass is cool it is something I can live without. Is the story the same if you are just talking about an outside temp display only?

If you're referring to a mirror, yes, the process is the same...(though there are no temperature only mirrors...there is a version that displays compass or temperature depending on which button you press, but they are made the same way as the other mirrors, so you would still have the mirror circuit board to deal with and the other issues that come with it as I mentioned previously, and ditto for the display board. If you're mainly wanting to have outside temperature display, there are some companies that offer standalone units that might take better to cannibalizing. I looked some years back for something else for my sled after I realized the mirror was going to be more trouble than it was worth, but the issue I ran into is that most of the standalone displays were LCD & not weatherproof, so being that this would be on a sled being operated in below freezing weather & getting wet, I just dropped the whole thing. Partly because I'm not a diehard sledder & realized that it's going to either be cold, very cold, or frickin' cold when I go out...just wear enough layers & peel some off if I get too warm. Problem solved, lol!

Anyhow...one last thought...what about incorporating a compass temp overhead console from the 05-08 Tacoma? You already have ignition switched power & ground up at your truck's console, all you'd need is the temp sensor out front of your truck & the wires run to it. In terms of simplicity, the mirror option or the console option are probably similar, as well as in cost too. Otherwise if you go with one of the standalone units, I've seen them from $25 up to well over $100, so you may be able to find something reasonable.

 

Once again, thanks for the long, detailed response. I appreciate the time and effort. Every now and again I spend some time on the internet looking for an elegant solution to a temp gauge. So far I have found big, ugly cheap ones that would stick out like a sore thumb. I have also thought of using the earlier 2nd generation Tacoma's existing set up to modify for use in my 2014. Unfortunately, the earlier versions are not compatible and the older versions are impossible to come by. Sigh. I will keep looking and I will find something somewhere. Thanks again.

 

This is the easiest and best way to get the outside temp gauge. There are no stand alone units worth your time. Bob has the easiest set up.

As far as is it worth it, it's 100% worth it. Id go as far as to say it's my favorite mod. Knowing the outside temp is very important when you're camping, and we all know the satellite weather app is worthless. It use to drive me so crazy to not have such a basic feature installed on such a new vehicle.

Also, you can see how great Bob is to deal with, that alone should be worth some $$

 

@RJP869 I asked this before, but I didnt follow through with it. I think you instructed me to email you, and you could provide the harness. I wanted to ask it again.. Is there a way for you to make me a harness to move my backup camera from my 2010 mirror to an aftermarket head unit? I think it would need an RCA plug to be spliced in. Its just something that is out of my experience to do (and I have the hardest time following a wiring diagram).

Secondly, is there a way to use the temp gauge that is already installed in my truck (was in the roof console, but I removed it) and move it to the mirror?

Or would it be easier/cheaper to replace the factory camera, with an aftermarket one?

Hmmm...this is a bit of a challenge. On the first part, moving the camera display to an aftermarket head unit...yes. However...you need to leave the original mirror in place, as the mirror is what is supplying your backup camera with 6 volt power. If you do want to change your mirror out for something else, we can make up a harness that would have a 12v to 6v power supply on it, but of course, that would add some cost to it. For the second part...because the temperature signal on the 09-11 trucks is digital, the only way to get it to display on the mirror would be to get a mirror such as the OEM 12-13 Tacoma backup camera mirror with compass & temperature display, tap into the digital temperature sensor wire going to the overhead display, run it down to the 14 pin mirror connector, install it into the proper spot in the 14 pin connector...and then hope it works. I say "hope it works" because I've heard of others who have tried this & the success rate is way down there, approaching zero (not sure why...the 12-13 Tacoma also has a digital temperature sensor signal coming off the AC Amplifier module in the dash, just like the 09-11's. But when it comes to digital, there could be other bits of data encoded in the signal that the overhead console can decipher or only the mirror can decipher...but not both. There's a link somewhere on the forum regarding using the 12-13 mirror, but I don't have that handy. These mirrors are typically $200-300, so that would be a rather expensive gamble. Heck, at that point we could supply you with one of our auto dim compass temp mirror kits and the camera reroute harness & it'll come in right at the low end of that price range...and it WILL work (no gambling required, lol!)

I was seriously disappointed when i bought my 2014 TRD new and the specs said compass/temp mirror but it did NOT come with it! Driving in the winter in black ice, I've found an outside temp gauge is a great way to be alerted to dicey conditions.

I did a bunch of research and decided on https://www.sensorpush.com/. I just zip tie it up under the bed on the driver's (opposite side of exhaust) and it works great! Follow the instructions b/c you need to sync to your phone first and it has to be right next to your mobile phone. After 3 years the battery just ran out and it's easy to replace.

Advantages i've found:

• relatively inexpensive
• you can set temp alert limits (I set to 38F and I get a notification on my phone when it drops to that temp)
• If you're camping or sleeping in the back of your truck, you can see the outside temp from your phone
• Reliable (I've not had any issues at all and have had it in 15F to 110F)
• easy install and no messing around with stock wiring

Installed my mirror a couple weeks ago. Had to calibrate the compass which was easy (just drove to work). Make sure you set the variance before.
I installed the temp sensor in a hole that was already present in the center of the radiator support.

 

Where did you get your Mirror
I have all the wiring from factory but no console or temp sensor quick easy enough to buy
Was it as easy as you stated?

Sir, I purchased a (I’m pretty sure pre-owned as I think that’s all you had at the time) orange GNTX-455 mirror from you on or about 4-6-21. Last night I went on a drive to run an errand. We are in the Valley of the Sun or Convention Oven AZ. It was 96+ outside and the temperature reading was 84 and bouncing from 88 to 72. Can I send it in for repair or purchase another mirror? Or could there be another issue?
Also the orange readouts are hard to see compared to the one we purchased for our 15! It’s an blue greenish color.
I pulled the 15 mirror from our 15 before the new owner took possession. The attachment for the mirror is different between the two, can the 15 mirror attachment be changed to fit the 07 windshield?

Update; Bob is sending me a new sensor that goes behind the grill. I asked him if I could pay for it but he is yet to reply! Also Hmmm looking at purchasing another 05 Tacoma so I will be needing another mirror…

Guy’s it may sound like I’m complaining but trust me I’m not I have always gotten great service from Bob. I’m pretty sure the mirror is out of warranty and things break…

Maybe a silly question, but is there a chance that I have wiring even though I don't have any sort of power features on my mirror? If so, how can I validate my setup to figure out what to buy here? I'm in a 2015 TRD Sport DCSB if that matters at all. If I don't have any, is this a mod that I could still take advantage of?

 

Hmmm… I’m willing to bet you have a plug with power just like I did in our 2015 SR-5. I did have to run a wire to the temperature sensor that I mounted just behind the front grill above the top of the bumper. It’s makes a little bit of a difference where you mount the sensor, up high and the heat from the radiator rises and heats the sensor. To low the summer sun that heats the asphalt this will raise the temp.

Also if you are just looking for an auto dim with direction & temp only I have the one I just removed from our 15 before the new owner took possession. I will say the temp reading on the mirror is about 2 degrees warmer than the average temperature. It’s because of you are driving over hot asphalt. In the winter is damn close.

Yes...there is a chance, like 33%, lol! On the 2015's, some were equipped with the white 14 pin connector tucked away above the overhead console with 3 wires in place. Some had this connector but with only 2 wires in place. And then there were the trucks where there was no wiring in place. About the only way to confirm what's there is to remove the overhead console & then look around for what may be up there.
