This is probably the only part of the country where you will see the Tundra a lot and people legitimately paying over MSRP for one.

Despite that, I don’t see any sequoias out here, they don’t even love them in California.

Honestly, isn’t the full-size SUV dead at this point except for limos and .gov?

Seems like a bad time for jeep to be pushing the Wagoneer and grand Wagoneer.

The Sequoia makes no sense to me. The Landcruiser has a LEGENDARY name plate. Sell the 200-300 series to the soft handed candied ass Nancy’s and the 70 series to guys like me who are going to use and abuse them.

The Sequoia makes even less sense now….what in the hell is up with the cargo area. Efffin idiotic. And no, the 3rd row seats do not come out. They redesigned the whole thing and this is what they came up with!? I tell ya Toyota baffles my mind sometimes.

This is what I want. Wife gets the SUV and I get the UTE. And they give us bullshit.

Far more Suburbans, Tahoes, Sequoias, and GMC Yukons sold in Texas and Oklahoma than Tundras plus Tacomas.

We are getting super esoteric now, but the reason the cargo area looks like that is for a variety of reasons.

Everybody now wants a comfortable third row seat because the average American family is apparently seven people and they always get into the SUV at the same time. ALL THE TIME. Seeing big SUVs being driven solo 90% of the time is purely in your imagination.

Removable rear seats are out of the question because focus groups told engineers that they are not going to be manhandling chairs that weigh 40+ pounds. Think 1990s suburban. And light removable seats are not comfortable.

There’s also the obsession of a perfectly flat cargo area when the seats are folded, to accomplish all that, you wind up with a high, not very usable cargo area with the third row folded.

The diesel in the 70s series is not compliant, although with recent rollbacks on the EPAs power that may change.

The 70s series also does not meet crashworthiness requirements for the US and Canada, although Canadian mining corporations do have an exemption to use them.

Finally, if you have sat in a 70 series, they are extremely lacking on any amenities and you would have a hard time selling them because everybody now wants power and leather everything and a TV screen in the dashboard.

You could make an argument that they could do a half assed attempt to make them luxurious the way Jeep has with the more expensive Wranglers.

I for one would love the opportunity to buy a 70 series in the US, but it seems extremely unlikely.

Yep. Ya would think they could of come up with a better place for the battery pack. That is the reason the cargo area is like that.

Had an ‘85 4Runner, that sure was a pure sports Utility with a capital “U”….didn’t even come with a back seat. We also have an ‘02 Trooper, completely fold flat.

Pretty sure the 70 is compliant for safety and epa. Notice there is a new DPF system for the HiLux, Prada, Fortuner etc.

Careful now, almost getting a semi just thinking about a stripped down sports utility…. lol!

I often look at what could of been gazing over Toyota of Gibraltar.

to be fair. America is the land of fake ruggedness and mall crawlers. We definitely have the terrain for Vehicles like that, but only a small minority actually does overlanding or works in rugged terrain. Most farms in the United States are huge Corporate farms now.

Theres no need for Vehicles like in the United States.

overlanding only became popular here within the last 10 years. Being America though, the whole scene is full of image only/Rice/Bro whatever you want to call it. People who seem to need 37s for car camping apparently. Put K02s on a Maverick and that’s all the image those folks really need.

I think that would be amazing to have in America! I just don't think there is a big enough demand for it. I would personally like to see more FJ40s. I am happy that Toyota is making some new-old parts! I wish they engineered cars now like they did the FJ40s.

I've been saying this for a while now. This is why they dropped the 2GR-FKS into the 3rd Gen. Simply put, Americans don't need the ruggedness of Toyota's global 4x4's and they know this. We care about gas mileage and Apple CarPlay lol

Personally, I'd kill for an LC Prado (yes, I know the Lexus GX is the same) or a LC 70 series, but being honest with myself, I and likely the majority of Americans don't need one.

    yep….mostly full of wanna-bees.

we live in a heavy AG area…what mostly see here at the farms are SR Tacoma 2WDs.

Yeah you’re right, not big enough demand. Sure wish they did, be all over an Extra Cab FJ.

Pretty much every small commercial truck here in the bay area is an SR 2WD or 4WD access cab.

Part of the reason why I bought myself a poverty package 4x4 utility, still waiting for it to be delivered.

Best part, I can use the HOV lane because it’s a two passenger truck.

Those FJ45 look amazing but they are so hard to come by. I have a buddy who has 2 of them and it is pretty cool. https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/old-landy-an-hj45-story-build-thread.1087547/
This is their restoration process but it also shows the really rich history behind their 45.

I honestly don't like all the technology that is being put in new cars now. I love my 2001 Tacoma which has crank windows.

I still have my ‘99 Tacoma…love that thing. Some of the new tech indeed do like. Backup camera for hooking my moto trailer, Spotify for my music, googles maps in the dash is awful nice to avoid most of the dipshits during commute traffic. Everything else I could live with out. If money were no object, would have FJ Company build me a FJ 43 and Crew Cab Truck. Good mix of new and old….of course kind of defeats the purpose of a cheap utilitarian vehicle.

    https://www.fj.co/

I too have an SR…and even then came with too much fluff. Wanted a manny trans/transfer case, rear seat delete and rubber flooring. The chassis feels burly….but the body and the rest feels delicate…have to be careful loading things and watch how I rundown the trails not to crease the paper thin sheet metal.

And these these thing should have a 2000 lbs payload, and a torquey turbo diesel. As it gets overloaded real quick, and do most of my driving under 2000 rpm. The payload on my 3rd Gen is an effin joke, just above 1000 lbs, my 1st Gen is around 1600. Shouldn’t these things get better rather than worse?

A 2015 tacoma trd pro auto with 4.0 gets 16/21 mpg. A 2022 Tacoma trd pro gets 18/22 mpg. I was trying to find an apples to apples comparison...same trim v6 auto 4wd. That's a 1mpg difference. The 2gr fks is an overrated engine in my opinion.

I would have loved the tacoma to have the updated 4.0 in the 4runner and pair it with a 6 speed minimum and I bet it would have gotten better mpg.

I agree completely. Sweers shit the bed in that regard. The 278hp 1GR was the natural choice for the 3G Taco. I’ve been saying the same exact thing for a long time now.

Other side of the coin, I’d be willing to be the 2GR is every bit as reliable as the 1GR, maybe even moreso given it’s used in many, many more vehicles. Much more data available to Toyota to refine the design.

Might be getting too old for this.
This engine was designed for reducing emissions. The Tacoma being one of Toyota's best sellers means it has a larger carbon footprint for the company which is why it changed and not the 4Runner and until recently, the Tundra, IMO.

Power and MPG could be better of course (any increase at all comes 2nd to emissions goals) but I'm sure bean counters decided this could maintain profit margins while costing the company little. Look at the upcoming Highlander. The Turbo 4 has some power band changes but the fuel economy is the same. It too is being done for better emissions.
