    I found if you have factory tailgate cover trimming a little (1/2 in) along with guiding cable to clear after awhile it wont bind anymore . Kind of like cable has memory and keeps its position so it wont bind .

    Got started on the 3rd gen tailgate assist mod tonight. Ran out of time so I buttoned it up for now. Not 100% sure which 10mm bolts go where but I'm guessing I can match the passenger side. Having a bit of trouble with my dremel and cutoff wheel attacking the welds. I'm thinking maybe I just need to get more aggressive with it? Then it's just drill out the holes and get it mounted up. Maybe trim the plastic part or maybe toss it? Dunno.

    Got it done. It is not a super trivial mod. Rather satisfying though.

    I just need to get the plastic cover part figured out.

    And just to be clear, I have @christian06 ’s solution. A fair bit of chopping. I neglected to take decent photos as I was rushing since I was in the wife’s spot in the driveway.

    That’s all I have really, before getting that piece out and cutting the fender sheet metal and drilling the holes out and grinding the edges and painting and bolting everything back on.

    I’ve bugged @christian06 to help me figure out one for my ‘02 Tundra but never got started on that one. I did my ‘05 Tacoma and it’s so good I have to pull the tailgate to get it open, even with a MH panel.

    Sorry to revive an old post but did you drill holes there to make it work? I got a tailgate assist as a kit, and I really want to use it but the support cable keeps binding up

    My assist kit is much different than that, and uses O.E.M. parts, with the exception of a hinge that makes it work., just my .02 cents.
