ATF Spill and Fill

Hello Folks,
Today I did a spill and fill on my 2007 tacoma 2.7 L 4 cyl A/T Automatic Transmission fluid. Mileage: 118K. I measured 3.5 quarts came out and I put back in 3.5 quarts of TOYOTA Genuine ATF Type T-IV. What worries me is both the Haynes Manual and the Toyota Owners Manual state that an Automatic Transmission (drain and refill) for a 4-speed transmission, 2008 and earlier models is 2.1 quarts (2.0 liters)! Why did 3.5 quarts drain out of my transmission? Was it overfilled? I'm pretty sure its the original automatic transmission fluid. Please tell me what you would do in this situation.

 

I thought the 2.7 Auto Trans had a dipstick?
I’d go by the dipstick, not what came out.

 

You're doing it wrong.

 

Do what we do when we can’t find an exact oil capacity when doing an oil change. Start at a low number, run the car to push oil through the filter, then check your dipstick until you’re at the right level. Obviously for you you don’t need to run the engine to check but you should still use the dipstick.

 

Mine is an 09, 2.7..It has a dipstick...drained it when cold and put new in to match what I took out...Checked with the dipstick after running for a while....What is frustrating to me is that the dealer told me it has lifetime fluid and you can't change the fluid....

 

I have a dipstick. I should have taken the truck out for a 10 minute spin, got the transmission up to operating temperature and checked the dipstick BEFORE I did the drain and refill. I'm thinking that I need to take out a quart.

 

Hi Dan, 3.5 quarts ATF is what I filled mine with. Drive it for 10 miles or so, then check the dipstick with the engine running. Should be at the "HOT" mark

 

I guess I need to run it for a while and check the dipstick. If it's too high, I'll have to try to drain some of the transmission fluid out.

See my post above, ideally you would want to check it in warm.
The transmission operates in the warm state, so I like to do the final check there.

 

The hot mark is for when it’s truly hot, it should be difficult to touch the dip stick tip when it’s in the hot range.

3.5 litres is about right.

I never measure what comes out. Who knows who did it last

 

Exactly! Anyway, I just checked the dipstick after a 10 mile drive and the fluid came up to the low mark for "Hot." This makes me think I need to add half a quart. I'm gonna hold off for now though. I still don't get how both the Haynes Manual and the Toyota 2007 Owners manual say, "2.1 quarts for drain and refill!"
