All time favorite body style of the Toyota trucks ‘79-83. Wouldn’t mind one as a Sunday driver, but have enough stuff to keep me busy.

Love this quote, one of the main reasons I started buying Toyotas because they did feel car like compared to the 70s American fullsizes I grew up driving. Kinda funny that I read a lot of people complain on here that Toyotas are too car like. They have been like that for a long time.

Why do you like the Hilux so much?

Guy: “From my perspective, I think the Hilux changed our perception of utility vehicles in this country. Up until the late Seventies, British people only used to associate four-wheel drive vehicles with Land Rovers. But then the Hilux arrived and it was tough, it felt more like a car to drive, and it had a pick-up bed that you could actually use. Looking back, Toyota had an incredible march on all other manufacturers when it launched Hilux in the UK.”

Same here, favorite body style 79-83 the next generation would be 2nd. Something about the very early 80's trucks that just looks right. Funny how something with no power steering, solid front axle, front leaf springs, and narrow tractor like tires. Could be considered more car like, but it probably was, and due to it's compact size.

I would like to see Toyota build a new 79-83 inspired pick up.

I know uh!? :) Those Landies they were coming from had miserable ergonomics, just a slight step above a tractor. Anything else would of been better.

Me too, the shop next to ours one of the guys has a new Bronco, sure do like looks of it, they nailed the retro look.

You can bet a team at Ford did the bean counting of EPA credit impact vs extra sales of the retro styling and said “Winner winner, chicken dinner”.

Think if they made the Ranger into Bronco truck it would sell like hotcakes. Saw spy shots of the new Ranger, meh…looks like a bloated Maverick.

Ford Bronco pick up would get my vote, only if it was a reg cab. I don't really care for the 4dr Bronco, they don't look bad with the larger tires. With the exception of the Bronco Raptor, that thing is hard to look at, but I think it was built more for the experience. The 2dr Bronco is the only configuration I would want to buy.

I don't care for the Ranger's new grill. The current version isn't the best looking midsize on the market, but the truck does have a cohesive design. The new Ranger might not look as good, even with its more truck like front end. But the Ranger Raptor might look good. The old one sure does.

I had a 91 V6 DX in the exact same color and side stripe. Bought it brand new and it finally gave up the ghost later with a headgasket failure. It was my last manual Toyota.

Looked exactly like this beautiful truck, same wheels and interior only difference was mine had a V6 on the grill.

Toyota could have a current product to compete with the with the Bronco, and what better vehicle than a regcab 4x4 Hilux with a 7spd manual and a crawler gear. I wouldn't mind just a simple 5spd. If Toyota still sold a regular cab Tacoma, even if it was a badged a Tacoma classic and still looked like a 2nd gen. I think people would buy them.

The test mule looks ridiculous, not that it matters. It's a test mule.

We had a bunch of Fords too, so I don’t hate them. Actually almost put down a deposit on a Ranger before I bought my Tacoma, but they were 6-8 months out, and the Taco was 5 weeks. Do like how Ford lets you do more a la carte options better than how Toyota does it. Fricken asinine how Toyota specs out their trucks.

I could do a base model Ranger with rear seat delete and a locker. Can’t do that with a Tacoma, have to get a model with a bunch of bullshit that I don’t want or need. Fricken idiotic that a manual trans is no longer available in the SR.

Alright here are some more Toys I have in my files….may of slipped a Ford in thar…. :D

I think that Garnet red was one of the prettiest Toyota colors I'd ever seen.

Toyota abandoned what made them a great truck company, at least in the US. When they got rid of the 4cyl manual option.

Toyota might have been better off discontinuing the Tundra in 2020, and having an all new Tacoma on the ground for 2023.

The new Tundra isn't a bad truck, but it's basically an oversized Tacoma. That really does not offer what the rest of the fullsize segment offers.

1st gen - it's got a built engine, a turbo, and waaaaaaay too much to list. 3rd gen - basic-bitch lift, S/C, Pro Wheels
I just wish it had a Tacoma engine AT LEAST. Having a vague 98-00 front end "design" isn't enough

Wish I still had this truck. Motor didn't have a lot of power but lock those hubs and it would go through anything.
