What should I expect to pay to paint hood and bumper?

This might be more suited for the SoCal forum, but I'm just wondering a ballpark cost to paint the hood and bumper. I'm doing the 2.5 updated front end and have most of the parts I think, but now I'm worried that the cost to paint is going to be astronomical. The bumper I got is spruce mica and my truck is BSP, can they just paint over the old paint or does everything have to be removed?

 

Take it to the shop and ask them, they're the one's you're going to pay.

 

It Varys on the shop you go to. I have a local guy that does great work for $150 a panel.

a full on business body shop will probably charge you closer to $1000 or so.
They have to sand down the body panels, fill in any dents or scratches, primer it. Sand it again and then paint.

That's what I was figuring, but hoping to get it done much cheaper, of course. I think I'm also going with an aftermarket hood, only because it comes already primered.

 

Usually the primer that comes on them are just an “E coat” it isn’t a real primer and it will need to be primed with a quality primer.

I'll also add don't be surprised if you get pushback/reluctance from some of the body shops on repainting the bumper as its surface is slightly textured. From what I understand the problem lies with when they go to prep (sand) the bumper they risk removing some and/or all the texture, making it a smooth(er) surface, which in turn alters the way the finished paint will show when compared to the other/adjacent textured fenders. But honestly to some degree I think it boils down to how picky you are in that to a paint purist (professional) it might be unacceptable, but to the average Joe they might be ok with it.

 

If you were close to me I could hook you up with my brother’s shop. Hood and fender for probably less than $750 my cost. I might even be the one spraying it. Lol I help out sometimes and would work there but my day job pays too well to walk away from.

 

D'oh. That would be amazing. But Kentucky is a bit of a distance.

 

I wonder how they repaint other parts, maybe they only deal in new?
And I feel like I'm not picky, but the truck is in pretty good shape right now, so I probably will have to find a higher end shop unfortunately or I know I'm just going to be bothered after they paint it and it's slightly off.

 

Depends on also whether you want them to blend into the fenders. You spent the money to change the entire front end no need to cheap out on the paint.

 

Go shopping around. Some don't want to bother with small jobs, so they'll give you an
astronomical number to encourage you to move on.
In my area, I guess north of $1K at a good shop. Mine was around $1600, but lots
of prep was required. The roof was in very bad shape.
That's not LA, though. I would think you would have a million choices.

 

Definitely noticing this already, lots of shops either say they don't want to do it or throw out huge prices. I figured it would be pretty simple if I just drop off the parts and pick them up a few days later.

 

Yeah most shops like the insurance work. They can make more money getting paid to unbolt something repaint the new part and bolt it back on. Every step is billed time if you do the hard part they don’t make as much.

 

I'd also see if you can get a referral from a detailer or friend that you might know. Had something similar and a detailer that I know referred me to a shop that had previously quoted me an insane rate to try to not get me to take their bid. They were super professional and just adjusted the original bid - to everyone else's point, you should get a detailed bid/quote with the step-by-step process, even if you're dropping the parts.

 

I actually know of a guy that I found through a detailer, he does amazing work at a great price, but he just stopped answering my phone calls like a year ago. Too busy I believe.

 

I recently did the 2.5 front end swap on my 2009 black sand pearl. I bought new aftermarket hood, bumper, grill and headlight space fillers. I went to my local Napa and they make rattle cans in house to your paint code, and I also bought SprayMax 2K clear in a can which is a true two part paint with hardener that you inject into the can when you are ready to use it. I used this to paint my fillers, grill, and bumper, I left my hood in the black primer for now. Im pretty happy with how it turned out for rattle can, the 2k clear really finishes it off providing a high gloss and protection compared to a straight up rattle can with no hardener. Of course its not a body shop perfect paint job, but I wasn't prepared to pay body shop prices for a 13 year old truck and i'm more then happy with the results. I've used the same process on motorcycle parts in the past so I was comfortable in my abilities decided to give it a try on my truck.
