    Hello.
New guy here. Tacoma 50k miles. Had fuel pump redone for the recall already. Last ran in March 2022 because of records I found of new tire purchase. Sat for three months after that. At first try, it starts for a second or so. After that, just cracks and cranks. I popped fuel line, it’s pumping. I cleaned the MAS. Wasn’t even dirty. No codes because battery was removed. Any ideas?

If it sat for 3 months, check the wires in the engine compartment. Rodents love to eat the soy wires. Also, look for rodent nests in the air intake which could cause a lack of airflow.

Thanks but thought of that. No signs of rodents. I even ran a snake up the tailpipe making sure it was clear.

When I disconnected the fuel line, I placed a mason jar under it and turned the key to on position. It filled the jar about a third full then stopped. Should it do that? I assumed that it would keep pumping. When I started cranking the motor it filled the mason jar. I did that thinking it had water in the fuel. It didn’t.

I don’t know how the immobilizer system works on the 3rd gen.
But on the 2nd gen, the truck will crank but not start. The fuel pump also runs as well, but the injectors don’t fire.

Is the a security light on by chance?

Smart key won't crank, but dumb key will crank with the light on and no injector flow.

This is my first path as well. If its a dumb key.

Fuel lines usually fill half a small water bottle in a few cranks for me.

It is a dumb key. So how do I check if that’s the issue?

The vehicle may think its being stolen.
    The immobilizer is obviously "working".
The dumb key (unprogrammed/no chip) is operating as it should,... crank but no fuel
The smart key is either not communicating or is not the correct key,.... you may need to get the dealer to fix the issue.

If the trucks original key is in the ignition to start it. Why would it “think” it’s being stolen?

    Terminology is important.
Do you have the key and the fob you always used to start it?
A non chip key will never start that truck.
Does the security light go out when you insert the key?

I’ll go out in a bit and check that light. To be clear. I may buy this truck. The battery has been removed so I hook cables up to it to try to start it.

    Ok
    Try this.
    Walk up to it.
Lock the doors with the fob.
    Hit unlock button twice.
    Open and close the door
    Lock the doors
    Hit unlock button twice.
Open the door and get in
    close the door
Lock and unlock the truck again
    Insert the key
Look at the immobilizer light and see if it’s off

    Try to start the truck

Ok I’ll try. To be clear though. I will have the hood up with jump cables attached to the battery cables to give it power. Will that mess up the configuration you gave me?

    Dude, install a battery
Your playing with computers that don’t like power spikes.

I'm not an expert at anything but I live my life by "Occam's Razor" which says the simplest answer is usually the correct one. Your battery is the most likely issue. Even if it winds up not being the issue, you are still going to need one. So as Tacoma Mike said above, Dude, install a battery.

Take a small spray bottle and spray some gas into the intake....if it runs for a few seconds its a fuel delivery issue.

Battery in it. Did the lock unlock get in thing. The red lock light continues to flash on and off. No start.
