I run regular without issue in the truck. Now if I could get regular with no ethanol I'd do it, hate that farm subsidy shit.
The bikes get 91. No ethanol. Ever.

My 1st Gen runs like crap on 87, always ran 91 or better in it.

The 3rd Gen seems to be ok on 87, however I can hear a ping every once and awhile, doesn’t feel like it effects the power though, of course I drive like there is an egg under the accelerator.

This test doesn’t really apply to modern engines because they all run high compression or turbos.

It should say in the owner's manual if octane makes a difference.

I just bought a Mazda turbo - first and only car I've owned that can both adjust for and take advantage of octane. 227HP if you fill it with 87 octane, 250HP if you run premium. It's a very noticable difference when you put your foot into it and really abuse the car. When you wind it up the engine even takes on a slightly different sound depending on what compression it's running at. For normal city and highway accelerating however, those missing 20 ponies aren't felt at all.

Then again, that was an engine designed for premium but can remap itself to take regular. The Tacoma is the opposite- it was designed for regular but can adjust timing for premium. However, the stock tune (and most aftermarkets) don't take advantage of it. The Tacoma engine strives to adjust conditions for a consistent performance. On the truck, I run the cheap stuff.

yep, which is why you can gain some performance with higher octane. my truck knocks on 87 when it's hot out.

10.7:1 is higher than the current Tacoma 4 cylinder, but less than the current Tacoma V6 engine. It seems to be pretty typical for modern engines, based on looking up a handful of examples.

    87. Anything different is just a waste of money. And Whoever suggesting 93 is a shmuck.

once you get past the knock threshold, there isn't any benefit from more octane though. It just makes your engine perform as it should, it isnt a power adder.

VW GTI will do that as well. I also still ran 87 though as those little cars overpower the front wheel grip so easily already.

The point is that there isn't more power because of the octane. More compression always get more power if there isn't pre-ignition.... in all engines.

Eh, so do all of the LSx type engines..... hell engines from the 80s did this.

I have used 93 octane since the dealer filled it up and they used 93 per my request. Never tried 87, never will, nobody will change my mind ever and I will pay the difference. I always try and buy the best so I'm always satisfied.

No added power, but I do get the additional cleaning additives when on occasion I use Shell mid grade which blends regular with the Shell V-Power NiTRO+ premium. I have a post around somewhere with links to it.

I run 87 that E10, never hear any pinging even when towing up hills. Higher octane's are fine if the engine is exclusively built to run on it.

You have some issue with your truck, or the fuel your using is of poor quality. I have zero knocking or pinging with my v6, ever, and theres plenty of power. Anyone that thinks using higher octane fuel is making them more power is only fooling themselves, and spending more.

I think some of that cheap ass gas as costco is a top tier fuel. I can tell you Gulf isn't.
