I have wanted to buy the 1920 every time I’ve seen it but something keeps holding me back.

The packaging doesn't seem premium enough.

The entire Old Forester line looks like bottom shelf $10/bottle whiskey. It's not, but their bottles and labels have the same visual cues.

    Marketing fucks up brains.

I just averted a near tragedy.

    20220702_184036.jpg

I tried to use a wine key at first but it pushed down in before it could bite. Almost dropped in but I was able to stab it with a knife and drag it up and out. :humble:

Next time use a lighter to heat up the bottle above the liquid. Or put the bottle in a shoe & tap it against the wall so the sloshing liquid pushes out the cork. Either way good job avoiding a buoy.

I think this will be my next bottle after I finally kill the couple stragglers I have.

I actually like the OF bottle designs in their old fashioned way. I don’t like modern design on a bourbon label but I do on a wine label. Go figure.

On another topic, brought around Woodford Double Oaked and Larceny to a neighborhood party, everyone really liked both. Larceny is still one of my top five though. Probably in part because I know it’s so cheap, but it’s so damn good with the perfect amount of sweetness.

    1920 is amazing
Michters rye is good, I think it’s priced too high

Seagrass is kind of palette specific, I’m on my third bottle this year, it’s not overly sweet like you would think. That price is awesome as well

I found this to be a fun read:

    https://www.bourbonbanter.com/banter/bottled-in-bullshit/

I love whiskey, but I spend an inordinate amount of time reading my way through ownership and mashbill heritage to determine whether I should even try something new that looks interesting. Most of the time it depends on mashbill, if you can even decipher that out (many bottles have no coding to indicate).

But when you consider that all these labels:

    Elijah Craig
    Evan Williams
    Heaven Hill
    Henry McKenna
    Larceny
    Old Fitzgerald
    Parker's Heritage

All come from the same distillery, it does start to emphasize the importance of getting to the bottom of the recipe, or even which batch is in your bottle. I do appreciate brands that code this stuff out - it helps prevent having 5 bottles on your shelf all with the same juice inside em.

To add on to my previous post:

Then you consider the other "distilleries" that source from Heaven Hill. Let's take the example of Willett/KBD. They source from multiple locations, but they are half a mile down the road from Heaven Hill in Bardstown, KY. Literally. Same street. Who would you source from? The vast majority of their product is almost certainly HH whiskey.

Some of their more notable brands:

    All the Willetts
    Noahs Mill
    Rowan's Creek

And they are also the contract bottler for Black Maple Hill, Conecuh Brands aka Clyde Mays, and Michter's.

Checking prices reveals *substantial* differences in price for these brands. Considering the main difference is mashbill possibly followed by age (if the age is stated at all), that should spur some thought. And that's if there is a difference at all. A lot of the bottles from these labels are the same whiskey from start to finish.

    Another good read:

A snippet. This is from 2008, but it illustrates the issue well:

Enjoying some Maker’s Cask Strength while watching a movie with the fam.

This is definitely one of my top 3 favorites. Curious how this differs from the 101, which I haven’t cracked open yet.

    HAPPY 4th!!
    Made in the USA
107 Proof. I make a nice ice cube in a shot glass. Takes down the proof as it melts. Very nice mid range bourbon.

Cask Strength is easily better than 101. Such a good whiskey!

They got me with the nice box and the area on the shelf that had been empty for a couple months.
