Stop Children What's that Sound....everybody look what's goin' round.....

I've got quite a bit done today. Yard work mostly and sprayed the trees / fruit trees that were loaded with them green beetles....came out of the trees by the thousands, now dieing, death by Ortho.
Started on and currently working on a upper receiver. Almost done but need to swap out optic from a different rifle because I bought a caliber specific for that one. 20220704_160311.jpg

That's cool! I didn't know there was a steam roller factory in Ohio!

That seems like a heck of a dead man's foot pedal.

I was thinking when I was looking at it how tough the operator had to have been.

I liked the little umbrella setup they had for the operator. Like the Sun made much difference with hot pavement & screamin’ engine. The ‘Ol kerosene “cannonball” road lanterns to set the mood. Ain’t no wonder they preferred nighttime work.

Who reads books in this crew?

I've been trying to find a fiction book I read 20 years ago.

I don't know title or author.

    Items I can remember:

    Main character is named Herman.
Lots of reference to shooting as the character grew up.
Herman was a crack shit with a rifle.
His uncle took him to a dove shooting compatition and bet his buddy that Herman could pic off doves with a rifle. He wins with 20/1 odds. His uncle bet $500(I think).
As the character ages he takes up flying.
In his adult years he meets up with a buddy who has been guiding in Africa for 20 years.
On the way back from the airport, they get pulled over. He asks his buddy how much money he has on him? He answers $250,000. He instructs his buddy to put the money in his truck safe because search and seizure laws have become vague in the last 2 decades . Police can't confiscate money without a warrant if it's locked away, or something similar .

As the story progresses, the FBI gets wind that he owns some odd sniper rifle that is classified as illegal. They attempt to confiscate, apprehend or both the main character.

Somehow the main character is able to shoot the rotor shaft of the helicopter that was used to gain access to the main characters compound. The chopper sinks in a pond or lake making it difficult for the FBI to find out what brought the bird down.

The FBI was able to find out after some time that the chopper was downed by this odd sniper rifle(that I can not remember for the life of me).

At this point the main character knows he is being persued, so he fakes his own death. He buried the gun then gets in his (Cessna?) Plane and crashes it over the ocean after he parachutes out 1st.

There were many references to Americans tiring of politicians promising things to get elected then never fallowing thru.

This is not a political topic. This book is fiction. I want read it again to see if it is as good as I remember

For some reason I think the book had the word "Promise" in the title. Ive searched 7 days to Sunday and can not find this book.

    Thanks in advanced.
    Kirk

    That doesn't ring a bell @koditten , but then I don't read many books.
This particular story has always stayed with me though. I read it pretty young and it gave me a great appreciation for freedoms we enjoy.
