I figure underground would be better, since it's out of the way.

Where would the pump be mounted with an underground tank?

I do not know. Never had an undeground rain barrel. Too much work and too expensive.

Since the yard is a mess, the machine in the yard now. This is the time to install the underground rain water collection tanks. Plus the masonry contractor does irrigation work.

I don't know the pros/cons to above ground tank vs below ground,

Below ground here is definitely a No Go. Be lucky to have it ever thaw with -40C. Even with a blanket of snow it wouldn’t stand a chance.

I just turn this one upside down & call ‘er good. Solid top keeps the Skeeters down too. Every once ‘n a while I might need to break out the hot glue gun but it suits the purpose. Pretty sure frost would eventually break anything.

If it ever cracks do you want to deal with digging it up? A polyethylene 55 gallon drum would be easier, no electrical running to it for a pump, and easier to drain in the fall/winter.

It's not too cheap if they are not food grade. I have only paid for 2 ever, they were food grade and 3x rinsed. Those cost me $70 /each. I had a contact for non-food grade (cleaning chemicals) totes for $40/ each, never wanted to chance it with the water storage. I also, had a contact years ago who was able to get me 13 food grade (vegetable oil) totes for free because the distributor would not take them back once the company changed suppliers. They were not cleaned or rinsed and some had some oil still within. You can't beat free.

I might have to get rid of my chickens. They are creating more of a nuisance than I would like. They don’t roost on the branches or ladders I’ve created for them, so the roost on the coop roof, the roof is loaded with poop from them and it’s a miserable task and tons of flies. We are probably 3 chickens (of 5 total) too heavy for the space we have for them not being caged. It’s going to be a hard talk with my wife but it needs to happen.
