3rd Gen DIY maintenance quick reference

Yeah I'm definitely servicing my transmission once a year now .spark plugs not too worried I've changed em twice in a 150k . Probably change em out this summer.

 

Oh yeah need to change the spark plugs for sure

 

I got to say this is an AMAZING resource. I am being pretty diligent on my maintenance and am pretty sure I am up to date on everything with exception of the 5K Oil (i know it's list as 10K but I am doing 5k intervals) and a tire rotation. (EDIT: I Forgot I have to check the UBOLT torque also)

I was wondering has someone listed the differences for the 2.7L engine somewhere in this thread? For example I know the 2.7L uses "regular" oil filters (thankfully ) but was wondering if how many other differences there are....

My friend from work called my Tacoma a "20 year truck" and that's what I am hoping to get out of it.

I wonder what’s the shelf life on these? May grab some now for my 60,000 service (another three years). I just did 30k couple of months ago and used RedLine brand.

 

I actually have a can of this at home prepping for my soon to be done 75k service, but thats a great idea. My half assed research is showing it should be good for at least 5 years and quite likely longer if stored in non extreme conditions

 

The price will definitely go up along with the fuel prices.

 

Anyone know where to find the torque specs for the different flanges on the exhaust system? I bought new gaskets but don't want to over do it. Thanks!

Just did a Power Steering flush. I used Valvoline Max Life ATF (replacement for Dextron II/III). Flush required about 1.2 quarts. Used the return hose method, turning wheel from side to side to pump out old fluid. 38k on the odometer and the fluid was pretty dirty.

I also took the reservoir out completely (three 10mm bolts), sprayed with brake cleaner, and used an air compressor to dry out. A pair of plastic hose clamps came in handy to keep extra fluid from spilling out of the in/out hose when the reservoir was out.

I too am doing my second flush . Currently at 154k mi. I'm gonna use prestone max asian vehicles power steering fluid with stop leak. Only place I could find it was AutoZone. My local store ran out so I ordered online . 4 smaller bottles came to $47ish free shipping. I'm sure I'm going to have to flush more often now since I went to a 315/75/16 tire.

 

Did my 75k fluid service, so along with the regular engine oil change i did the oil in front/rear diffs and transfer case, and flushed the power steering fluid (transmission was already done at 55k). The diff oil was understandably dirty, the transfer case looked ok, but holy shit the power steering fluid was disgusting. I flushed through ~1.5qts of ATF to get it looking good again.

A couple of things I learned: the transfer case fluid shoots out of the drain hole with a ferocity akin to the aftermath of a Taco Bell lunch; the initial placement of my drain bucket was comical compared to where to the fluid ended up on my garage floor. And that a T55 bit can save the day if you happen to have misplaced your 10mm hex bit. I guess good thing I was already planning on replacing the 10mm front diff plugs with these 14mm socket plugs anyway.

I decided to get that because it was in stock and 3.79 per tube.
Says it is NLGI 2 and for high temperature wheel bearings and chassis parts so that should be good.

 

When it comes to the "Propeller shaft".....I have looked at a ton of vids and put my truck up on the lift.....VERY strange after looking at this entire thread!

I have a 2019 TRD OR DCSB and have ZERO zerks.......rear none ... front NONE.....so was there a point in time that Toyota simply went zero service on them?

The reason I am asking is that we but the truck up on the lift and we simply cannot find zerks whatsoever?

If they are there we don't have 'em.....am I the first/second/third figuring this out?????

 

Nope they removed them in 2018 or so. I have a 2016 and have them all
it has been pointed out way back on this thread that they are now gone. (somewhere)
well at least we got you to crawl under the truck..

I have a 2019 TRD OR DCSB and greased my Front propeller shaft around 30,000 miles recently.

 

My 2022 has zero zerks on the driveshafts - front and rear - so much for servicing the future only replacement

 

Read thru the entire thread thanks but several 2019 TRD OR have zerks....mine simply does not.

EXCACTAMUNDO! It is weird that across the model year Toyota decided to swap em out. Not complaining but something to notice. Thanks for posting up!

So I believe that around 2020 the zerks were gone.

 

I looked around on my 22' also, no zerks.
