Truck Camping Photo Thread

Right on. There’s some good dispersed spots if you follow Lots A Lakes to Packer Saddle too (mostly nearer the saddle). You can drive right out the back of the 4x4 campground and up and out. Never tried it with my bike/rack on though.

 

Owyhee Canyon was an adventure. Camped out near the water the first night. The second night, we found a spot overlooking the canyon but watched as a thunderstorm rolled in from the distance. The high winds whipped our campsite, trashed the cheap Coleman tent (iKamper stayed home because we need a ground tent for our old dog.) We hastily broke down the awning in gale force winds while the table and lighter gear got overturned.

We cleared camp and set about trying get to Succor Creek. Found a nice creek side site close to midnight after navigating some questionable overgrown rock roads through cattle land in the dark.

It was great. Saw owls, bats, hares, all sorts of nocturnal critters along the way.
drove up to the shoulder of Three Finger Rock and drove miles and miles of endless rangeland.

 

Holiday weekend- setup my campsite along Point Sublime Trail on the edge of the North rim of the canyon, hit some side trails via truck & mtn bike. Kanabownits Spring, Swamp Point, Saddle Mountain Trail, Marble Viewpoint, etc. The exploring potential is near endless. Btw, if you’re running trails in the Kaibab Forest, bring a chainsaw. Felled trees are everywhere and your luck will run out.

 

Excellent images - just excellent - could I make that on stock tires? Would love to get up there on a clear night and shoot the stars.

 

Muchas gracias! Yeah, stock tires are no problem as long as things aren’t super rainy & muddy. Felled trees are your biggest potential obstacle.

 

I am always surprised by these posts from Oregon. I've only ever been to the lush coastal areas and keep adding pins to my gps from posts like these. Is there good fishing in the river? Thanks for sharing, looks awesome!

 

This looks incredible! How were the temps? Do you need a reservation to camp at Point Sublime? Or can you generally find spots along the trail with canyon views?

 

You have to get a permit to camp at the ranger station something like $15 or so, and I'm sure the temps were warm in the day (80-90), a bit breezy, and cool at night lows of around 59.... so nice and cool. I'd love to shoot the milky way from up there. I'd venture there is no cell service either.

 

No reservations, it’s first come first served. There are no established campsites or facilities except for some picnic tables at the lookout. Also no fires allowed. Point Sublime Trail is relatively remote- I saw maybe 10 people all holiday weekend, and that’s when it’d be at its busiest. There aren’t many ideal spots to camp along the trail, but there are plenty right along the edge once you’re near the lookout point/terminus. I picked a heavily forested spot several miles from trail’s end.

You’re supposed to get a permit for backcountry camping in the park, but I don’t think many do out in the remote areas where you don’t really see rangers. You’re also not supposed to have unlicensed OHVs, but I saw several in remote areas of the park.

Temps were great. You’ll be at 9k ft elevation, so day/night summer temps will generally be 70/80 to 40/50.

Btw, if you’re active military/veteran/gold star fam/dependent, you qualify for a Nat’l Park Svc Military Pass, which grants you free lifetime access to all nat’l parks & federal recreation areas. It’s normally $35 for a 7 day park pass.

 

A bit cooler than these temps, but negligible. Cell svc is spotty as you move around, but I had unexpectedly good svc at my campsite and at trail’s end. I streamed the British Grand Prix on iPad via Hulu on Sunday morning w/ zero buffering.

 

My military national park pass is annual. Not lifetime.

 

The pass itself must renewed yearly at the moment, but it is a lifetime benefit. Lifetime passes that do not require annual renewal are supposed to be available later this year.

 

I skipped all the other new posting and went straight to your Camping contribution. Nothing more relaxing than seeing camping photos. Our 12 year old GSD "Santino" goes everywhere with us. Good for you!

 

Military pass should be free and lifetime and good for you and your spouse.

 

If you order it online, there’s a $10 processing fee. If you get it at a park, it costs nothing. The benefit gets you free entry for life, but the pass card itself needs to be renewed each year until the lifetime passes are made available later this year. It’s good for the passholder +all occupants of a non-commercial vehicle, family or not(15 people max). It also is good for passholder +3 individuals when ‘per person’ fees are req’d, ie if I rode mtn bikes into the park w/ 3 buddies, we’d all get free entry. Bike/foot Grand Canyon entry is $20 per, so we’d save $100 total.
