Favorite Whiskey?

Last nights offerings.



Oh, and this, which is not whiskey, but damn was it good.

 

Picked up 2 new Compass Box bottles. The Artists Blend used to be called Great King Street Artist Blend, and it was good. I believe this is a new recipe so I'm look it forwarded to trying it. Never heard of Orchard House, but I've never had a bad from them.

 

Today's bring-homes:



I want to talk about this Hirsch on the left.

Older bottles of Hirsch are top shelf rarities costing thousands. This new Hirsch isn't really Hirsch. The name is now owned by Hotaling, which also owns Anchor Distillery, which is one of the US's few true producing distilleries.

That's not what's in this bottle:



"Distilled in Lawrenceburg, IN". This is MGP bourbon. But, unlike most re-labeled sourced stuff, NewKindaHirsch puts a remarkable amount of transparency right on the bottle about the juice you're buying. Both the mashbills and the ages used in the blend are detailed on the back. There's also a batch number label on the stopper, allowing you to track down more of the same if you love it:






This is the kind of stuff every NDP/re-label should be doing. No smoke and mirrors. I don't care that this is sourced whiskey - MGP makes many fine spirits - what I care about is that I'm not getting bottom shelf recipe and age in a fancy glass with 75% markup.

Thanks for posting this. I've learned first with tequila and scotch that you don't need to spend a ton of money for good bourbon. Luckily my favorites so far are EW SB and Balcones pot still. I "think" Balcones makes their own. Either way both are $30 and easy to find. I found Eagle Rare once and I paid $50 because I like it (but find BT too sweet). But I'm done chasing and over paying!

So I'm not good at picking up a bunch of flavors in whiskeys. I'm assuming I like EWSB and Balcones so much because I like the higher corn mash bills? Who knows.


EDIT: I also like EW 1783 but I find it a bit "thin". If that's a thing.

Post dinner and homemade apple pie. Can’t go wrong.

 

Have a full schedule tomorrow at work, but what better way to prep than have some barrel proofs the night before.

I always wonder if this kind of release is actually them trying to do something special, or if someone just wants to monetize some ancient shit from the warehouse thats been sitting forever and unsuitable for the usual product line.

 

I just can’t imagine enjoying that high of a proof.

 

Id water it down some almost certainly.

 

My buddies dad lives right next to the Jack Daniels distillery, and I asked him to grab me a bottle of the little coy hill, but they apparently sold out in a few hours.

 

I have a couple bottles of the coy hill from the release earlier this year…it’s fantastic

 

Picked up a bottle of Col Taylor Small Batch last week, and a half size bottle of Weller SR the week before.

I'm also really enjoying the Makers 46 bourbon. I've never cared for Makers really, but the 46 is something special.

 

Anything made at Buffalo Trace is my go to. Unfortunately PA sucks and it’s all EXTREMELY limited. To get a bottle of Blanton’s you need to be at the store when the truck arrives and stand in line for 2 hours. It’s insane.
