GameStop today announced that its Board of Directors has approved and declared a four-for-one split of the Company’s Class A common stock in the form of a stock dividend. Stockholders of record at the close of business on July 18, 2022 will receive a dividend of three additional shares of Class A common stock for each then-held share of Class A common stock. The dividend will be distributed after the close of trading on July 21, 2022, and trading will begin on a stock split-adjusted basis on July 22, 2022.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to do a little dance.

 

Stock splits are largely symbolic. They are breaking a $20 bill into four $5 bills.

I guess if there enough stupid people that think they are getting a big gain for free they will bid up the price.

 

This is a dividend split too, not a traditional split. Wonder what happens if you're super short on a security and have to cough up equivalents. Guess we'll find out towards the end of the month

 

In theory couldn't this prove the whole synthetic shares thing? When brokers report how many people were issued an additional 3 shares per 1 previously owned, and it wildly outnumbers the amount of real shares there are supposed to be?

 

That's long since been proven beyond any reasonable doubt. The powers that be just don't care. HOWEVER, if you have to supply a dividend equivalent for all of the outstanding shares, that's where things can get messy.

The dilution effect of issuing shares out of thin air and quadrupling the outstanding float does the same thing to the stock price as a traditional split.

Maybe a bunch of people start buying thinking they are getting a deal, the short sellers panic and buy to cover their positions, and you get your MOASS. I hope you do!
