That’s kind of a waste of time, plus you’ll need a new gasket. You can do that if if the other steps don’t reveal anything, which they probably will.

I don't think a 5 min job and a 15$ gasket is a waste of money or time at this moment, since the truck is not used it's a good moment to inspect thing while troubleshooting. I don't know if he the original owner but at near 100 000 miles i think it's a good moment to see the condition of the timing chain, if in the past the truck had very long OCI or neglect there will be streching no doubt and a floppy/stuck tensioner will throw random thing at you. It's just weird that everthing started with a pot hole. Replacing/swaping the solenoid is the best bet for sure now.

Not many people know that the chain tensioner is a maintenance item, because well they last a very long time. And cleaning the 4 bolt before they seize for good in the aluminum is a must to have happy time when the next inspection/repair is needed.

yep i found some picture and indeed there a gap at the second hole (left to right on the used one). Add some pressure and it will probably open more.

There’s absolutely no need to clean those inspection cover bolts unless you’re taking them out anyway. The #1 chain tensioner behind that cover isn’t operated with oil pressure (unlike the #2 tensioners on top of each bank). It’s just a spring and ratchet. Also extremely unlikely to fail.

Look, I’m just saying to start with the most logical simple steps first, which is the sensors & solenoids the codes point to.

I can see how that wording was confusing for you. #1 : spring & ratchet
    #2 oil pressure

Based on the picture @TnShooter posted from the other thread Id agree with you. Be interesting to see if its partially stuck the other way now, as I went from over-advanced to over-retarded. According to the codes at least.

For anyone troubleshooting this issue in the future, below is the oil flow to advance the cam.

Is it a gasket or is it FIPG? Im not opposed to taking a quick look while Im right there. No need to have that thought hanging over my head next time Im 3+ hours into the woods away from any form of cell coverage. If its a real gasket parts availability / lead time will be the deciding factor. Will plan on swapping bank 1 vs 2 solenoids tomorrow regardless. And no, Im not the original owner. Bought it ~5 years ago with ~44k miles. Seemed well cared for cosmetically but who knows the exact history, OCI, etc.

It's a gasket but i saw many people using FIPG with no problem.

    More picture for operation clarity.

It’s a gasket, but you may be able to get away reusing the old one with a thin smear of silicone sealer or the like if the old gasket comes off in one piece.

Well your the first i met who claim that the primary tensioner is not operated by oil pressure.

you can see the oil port on the head and behind the primary tensioner.

The spring help the cylinder to stay extended and the ratchet in the notch when the engine is not running.

I don't understand why you think i'm confused by the wording. There even a check ball in the drawing. Is there anyone who have one scrap sitting, i want a tear down of that !

As I was afraid, the solenoids are not interchangeable due to the mounting bracket so Im not going to be able to swap them

Damn, do you have any "good" friend with a 4.0 :) you can gamble on a new one or check if you have a rear ended Tacoma in a scrap yard, it should have a good vvt-i solenoid i presume.

I don't mind spending the money for a new one. Even $150 MSRP is fine if that is in fact the problem. Id like a way to confirm though, something that doesn't involve taking two trucks apart haha

Guess Ill pull both bank 1 and 2 OCV and compare how they look and sound when power is applied to the terminals. The other thread I quoted from above also mentioned jumping power to the OCV while the truck is running.

Pulled bank 1 OCV tonight. It looked fully closed this time compared to when I had it out Sunday. Shot some MAF cleaner through it, got a little bit of sediment out but nothing bad.

Used a 9v batt to power it. It worked absolutely great - about 90% of the time.. handful of times it did nothing and remained closed. Still drawing ~1 amp. Not sure what the failure mode is there, but will have a new one in from the local dealer tomorrow.

Also pulled the cam position sensor but that was very clean no buildup or anything.

Lastly I did confirm the solenoids / OCV cannot be swapped from side to side due to the mounting bracket. Pics tomorrow

The solenoid use a duty cycle to operate i found some waveform if this can help you.

That's the cam/crank waveform, here's the one for the oil control valves (basically a 0-12v duty cycle).

Thanks for the correction, i don't know why when it took the screenshoot i was at the next page and didn't notice.

Some guy on youtube said that the hold position is around 42% duty cycle on the solenoid i don't know if it's true but it's a ball park. You can use the waveform 5 graph to see if your "phaser"/sensor on the VVT work correctly. I think the (a) and (b) on the graph should be swapped. NE is the crankshaft

    VV1-VV2 are the phaser position.

Still waiting for parts. Apparently the last 8 of my VIN also matches a 2nd gen Tundra and there was a mix-up on the phone. The OCV for the 4.6 1UR-FE is only 1 digit off which doesn't surprise me at all
