1st Gen Lunchtable Thread - General Discussion

This is how I feel right now. I have a day job that pays well, and a toddler that needs constant attention. The easy thing would be to shell out $600 to have my TOB and pilot bearings replaced like I did when my cousins shop did them (and clutch) years ago. (He I think only charged me $300 in labor or something ridiculous and even told me after the job was done it was a ridic job for the amount he charged). But my pride and dislike in spending a bunch of money in something I can do myself is the reason I go into the garage in 1-2 hour increments and chip away at it. I am currently in the "why did I take this on, this is dumb and not even fun" phase of the process but it will get done eventually.

What's really biting me in the ass right now is that local wheeling isn't fun for me anymore. Drive 2 hours to beat the fuck out of the truck at the offroad parks isn't as enjoyable as a planned out 5 day adventure. Well those planned out 5 day adventures ain't happening with a toddler at home unless I want the fastest path to a divorce so I have been enjoying 2 wheel offroad therapy. I can ride for 2-3 hours a day at the fraction of the time and cost the truck requires. It really makes me look at the truck sometimes like damn is it even worth all the time and effort when I compare the two? Granted I'll never sell the truck. Too many hours and too many doll hairs in it. But it does make motivation low to even touch it.

Yeah I definitely feel for you over there as well, eastern US wheeling is harder come by in any real capacity. I try to always have my truck ready for spontaneous trips, 2-3 days is nice, 5 days is the goal, the occasional 1-2 weeker is a treat. Project burnout is a real thing too though and pushing through it can make things worse sometimes. I have no shame in admitting I have zero interest in ever having a child and this is one reason. I know it's gonna be a long tough slog to the grave as it is, I don't need more obstacles to dodge when I get a few minutes and enough cash to have a little fun. Props to you for figuring out how to make it all happen, that is a real achievement.

 

I'll keep my eyes out for a set. I think Jason Berry had some Icons at his place a while back.
Don't be afraid to rebuild them your self. You can do it with basic tools and a vice. Most motorcycle shops or 4 wheel parts have nitrogen and charge about $20 to fill your shocks.

It does exist (free legal wheeling) it just requires 5-6 hours of driving to find it, at least for me. Thankfully I am not totally burnt out on it, just frustrated at only getting an hour or two here and there when I know the project could be complete in a day. With the kiddo it's almost like an investment. Like I know eventually I will have a wheeling/wrenching/riding buddy, it will just take time. It will be worth it when that day comes and hopefully make some incredible memories together, but it's still a long road. Or he can absolutely abhor everything I love and play baseball or something equally as boring and atrocious.

So much truth in this Not that I will sell my trucks but quads and dirt bikes are so much cheaper. to ride and maintain. They come prebuilt and if you brake them you don't have to worry about how you are going to get to work on Monday. I just found out that there is a track about 10 minutes away that is maintained by the city and is free to ride.

 

feel ya man. Have a 2.5 yr old and when I'm home from work she is my #1 focus, has to be. That's the only time my wife gets to do her things after taking care of her all day I'm at work. Weekends we trade hours of time here and there, but taking on any kind of project where I don't know for sure that I can get it done in X amount of time becomes daunting and easy to put off.

Toyotas and 4x4s and trails aren't going anywhere though. Shit changes but it will still be the same in a few years time. Once our kids are older we'll be lucky if they want to spend any time with their mom and dad at all so I'm trying to enjoy it while I can lol.

 

Hahaha I have plenty of wheeling buddies, local trails not so much. I do want to see that thing in action eventually though.

Not only that but they are insanely durable! When I got my DRZ I packed sooo many tools/tubes/repair shit acting like it was my truck and keep stuff on me just in case. Never needed any of it. Now with the husky I only carry a tube, zip ties, some co2 canisters, and the factory tool kit.

Yup we split time on weekends too. Wife and I both work full time and he's in daycare, so when he's home we just want to enjoy our time with him. My free time starts after bed time typically. But I for sure agree, trucks and trails will always be there.

Already been making memories with him in the truck.

This whole us planting a kid is a little reassuring having a go kart project now

We don't have kids now and I'm having a hard time having a few days off to take care of bigger things on the LC

imagine opening up a "what's this noise thread" and seeing 13 consecutive replies that just consist of

 

Time off as in, I'm constantly deviating and having to do stuff at home. I'm busy once I'm out of school.

I set up backsplash on the entire kitchen, ran lights under cabinets, put up shelving in the laundry room, need to put up a wall cabinet, need to put ceiling fans, need to work on the yard, work on furnishing the other 2 rooms, had been busy clearing out the garage, and much more.

New home stuff has kept me busy for the most part. That and stuff we do on the weekends when we head out.

 

I'm already dead inside

 

Nah, you can't be that indifferent if you're planning for kids haha.

 

The biggest issue really would be downing the LC for more than a single day, and working through the heat (outside) which is....most of the day
