Do you have any pics of that spot before it was welded, that show how much rust was inside before they welded that plate on?
ALso what was name of this place I may need find a place near me it appears on mine that the rust is in the upper corner and on driver's side it is so close to the fuel lines you almost cannot cut that portion of metal out close to the top :/

@TacoBell07 Unfortunately I don't any any more pics. These were sent to me from the people working on it. I can't recall the name of the spot but they worked on big rigs/ trailers etc...

Not sure what the availability is, but I know Toyota sells frame sections depending on the year. There are also at least a couple of aftermarket companies as well.

Oh hell, I'd be pretty happy with that repair. If I found rust like that on my truck, I'd buy a lift and fix it myself. I've been trying to think of a good excuse to get a lift for my garage anyway. I have approval from my financial advisor (wife) but just don't like the thought of having $2,000 worth of tools sitting, not being used most of the time. Of course, that doesn't seem to bother me in my gun safe.........
    That's a good looking repair.

My bet is the metal you welded in is of better composition than the frame. I was thinking of quality, but I think Toyota's choice of metal is of good quality for what it is, it was chosen for ease of forming.

I bought my 2010 new and took it in for the recall a couple years ago at which time they did the inspection and the CRC application and said that the frame was fine. Just two days ago I crawled under to do my annual scrape and paint on any rust that was showing on the frame and found a hole rusted through the cab mount. I called my local dealer that preformed the CRC application and talked to him about it and it sounds like it is going to be replaced under the frame warranty. I will find out Tuesday if it will be replaced. Truck still looks like new with 172000 miles with exception of the frame.2D7B8C0E-936F-4C3A-9C38-02A8540E9BA9.jpg201EB12B-56DB-40AF-9D40-D539158AFB01.jpg

I do a lot of DIY repairs (cars and everything else) because I'm a cheap@ss and don't like paying for something I can do myself - even if I don't want to do it. I'm so cheap, if you give me something for free, I'll take it even if I have nothing to do with it just because it's free.

That being said, I DO have three welders and a Hypertherm plasma cutter - and even a mid-rise lift, BUT the frame is one thing I won't do myself. Having been piddling with cars since I was in high school (I'm 60 now), over the years I've learned that it takes a LOT of knowledge, skill, and understanding to properly and safely weld a frame

I'd still give it a shot. If I ended up blowing holes in the frame or not getting good penetration, I'd enlist the help of a 'professional'.

It's not a"blowing a hole" or even ugly weld thing. One really has to know WHERE a frame can be welded - and more importantly, where it can't. This along with how much heat you can put into the weld, and even what angle to make the weld relative to the frame. If one doesn't understand the rules/methods, the result could be catastrophic, not just ugly. Seen it happen more than a few times.

Two things I found while messing with frame, one the picture shows multiple pieces of metal. The water gets in between these multiple pieces and at very least rusts the outer piece from inside out.
Two, I agree whatever metal Toyota used is total s#$%, Ive had other vehicles and never witnessed something rust as easily as this 05 Taco frame.
Even my factory control arms that rebuild with polyurethane bushings have rust on inside of them, its completely absurd that there's a 12 years limit on frame replacement for this truck.
There's no way this truck will last as long as it should have had Toyota actually used good metal.

Just cut it out, patch it and call it a day. I've done both the front sides near the cat on my truck. Figured by the time those rust through the truck will be flipped over in a ravine or something.
I also capped all the holes in the frame up front with the OEM toyota frame cap kit. Then sprayed Eastwood internal frame coating.... then sprayed fluid film all up in the boxed section of the frame. If it rusts further I'm just burning the f*cker to the ground.

My next task is to remove the bed and do it all over again to the rear C channels.

On driver's side its so rusted up in high corner it will be difficult to get a patch welded on the top part of the area but could weld it to the sides and bottom and think it would be better than it is now.

Do you have any photos of the patches to share?

Also what thickness metal did you use to patch this area as the area is really 2 pieces it appears. Where did you buy the metal from you used for the patch?

Does anyone make a replacement frame that is better than Toyota makes? Frames were replaced under warranty all the time... so it has to be cost effective to replace the entire frame.

What we need is a carbon fiber replacement...

They just make frames out of stainless steel like DeLorean did, seems pretty obvious to me.

I can appreciate your concern but I fail to agree that a good looking patch like that, would be worse structurally than the big hole that was there before the repair.
I'm a Mechanical Engineer and have been working on a lot of things for a lot of years. I'd give it a shot.

If youre talking about photos of the leaf spring mounts attach to the frame you can tell that the separate pieces of frame are warped and de-laminating due to the rust that has got in between.
I think you mean stealer ship.
