My two Remington Rands - both 1944 production. The first is all original, the second my CMP mixmaster with a RR Frame, Colt Korean Conflict contract slide and 80s vintage barrel. Both with period appropriate holsters.

Got my first 1911 this week, put 100 rounds through it yesterday, not a single hiccup. Can’t wait to break this thing in!

.......so, ok, the Tisas GI 1911.

I bought one off of Gunbroker just to see what's what.

Disclaimers- I have never reviewed a firearm before so be gentle. And I am an unabashed 1911A1 fanboi having carried them a bit during my 2 proud Army enlistments.

I've been building & repairing 1911s and building 1911A1 replicas for myself from new, new surplus and WW2 vintage parts as a hobby and for sale for well over a decade, fun! These days the only pistols I shoot out on the local BLM are a 1911A1 and a Kimber 1911 .22. I've owned pretty much ever make & model of auto pistol over the years, a few still sit in the back of the safe as trading fodder.

Well, out of the box it was all deeply green parkerized, everything to include the two Checkmate GI contract mags. The little tag said forged frame & slide, ok, not a real big deal but something that was required for the 1911 back in the day and the current(ish) Colt contract guns for the US Military.

fit. well fitted, solid with zero play. Also not a big deal but nice to see. After full disassembly with the usual MIM small parts it appears the sear is milled bar-stock, neat-o. Thanks to good CNC there is not one mill mark or scratch, zero blemishes. Frame -- slide rail alignment is perfect with zero wear marks on from the dust cover after a few 100 rounds, nice. The few Rock Island 1911s that have come across my bench for repairs/upgrades cannot say the same, not even close. The machine quality by comparison looks like something from Harbor Freight. A RIA that I replaced the factory sights on reveled a hollow injection moulded GI rear sight for crap sakes. The barrel/link fit is perfect, primer strikes just above centerline and no side wear of the firing pin. The firing pin stop is well fitted and properly countered. This is more important for timing than most people realize, either way it's well done. No proof marks anywhere but I suspect Tisas makes this 1911 for foreign military contracts, hence the random availability and inexpensive price.

ok, shooting. The main reason 'new' 1911s appear on my workbench and why they have a certain reputation is the extractor. You can buy a Wilson mag that shoves the round up into the breech and make a 1911 with an improperly tuned extractor work but the firearm is still out of spec. I've never not been able to get a 1911 with feeding problems up & running with a GI mag after properly dressing & tuning the extractor.

it shot just fine. Minute of tall-boy beer can accurate out to 50 yards & beyond. I only shoot ball ammo and a GI gun is only designed for ball ammo but it shot just fine. Mr Blue shot it and promptly went to Gunbroker and ordered 2, right there on his phone out on the BLM. Matt, the ex Army tanker did the same but only ordered 1. All guns have since arrived and been shot with equal performance for the pistol and supplied magazines. Checkmate has been making a quality GI 7 round 1911 magazine for like ever. That little 'c' on the Colt factory mags is for Checkmate. The 'm' for some other manufacturer

$460 shipped with background check ($40 here in Oregon). This last bit is important as these days I could not build a similar quality 1911A1 from parts for less than $1200

    I like

After a few 100 rounds I did replace the, grips, grip safety, grips and MSH with surplus WW2 era GI and the extractor, hammer & strut with new surplus just because I have them and to break up the overall goofy all green parkerize. As it should the parkerize is absorbing oil nicely and the darkening. I sold the replaced parts, box & tools, manual on the Ebay for $99

what I did not like was the odd checkering on the wide Spurr hammer and the cheap replica GI grips.

pics next to a homebuilt GI-sih replica. I put some H&R Retro sights on it.

Just the 400-500 rounds Kimber recommends. Since it’s so smooth and consistent already I don’t think a whole lot will change lol

Kimber only recommends that because they have produced some pure junk of late and hope you will just go away. The Custom II and more standard 1911s from them mostly just need an extractor dress/tune. But the 10mm and Micro 9 they put out were/are pure crap

Yea, that’s what I had heard. They hope any “issues” resolve themselves, but luckily I’ve had none so far. Will keep on shooting & enjoying this platform
