Did the dremel mod yesterday on an accumulator I bought at the dealer, and installed today. Not the worst install ever, but definitely not fun. The brake line fitting threads applied enough pressure on the accumulator ports that I could not unthread the fittings by hands, which meant a thousand cycles of spinning the wrench a bit, lifting, rotating, setting and spinning again. Probably took me an hour just to get the thing out.

When I installed the new one, I had no trouble. Held the accumulator up there, threaded the fittings by hand, bolted to the transmission and then snugged the fittings. I’m pretty sure the problem with removal was I still had the accumulator bolted to the transmission while I was unthreading the lines. This held the accumulator in a tighter spot putting more preload on the lines which put pressure on the fittings and threads, making them hard to unthread with fingers.

In the future I’d definitely considering pulling the driveshaft. I would highly recommend pulling the exhaust support as well, which I did not and struggled because of it.

definitely need a ratcheting box wrench (12mm) for the heat shield bolts (especially the top left one) and you also need a 10mm line wrench. A regular wrench is a bad idea on the fluid lines.

    Final thoughts:

my clutch is now MUCH softer. It’s not necessarily bad, just different. I’ll probably get used to it just fine. I am wondering if I still have air but I bled probably 13 or so times and had no air coming out so I called it good. The clutch works fine, so I think this is just how it is.

The engagement is for sure much better. It is a drastic difference. The clutch engages in the exact same spot every time, so I know exactly how to operate the pedal now. It probably does start to engage sooner off the floor than before, but that isn’t bad. Overall I’m happy with it. In a few days after some use I may pop the heat shield off and give it another few bleeds just to see if any residual air wants to come out.

overall a good mod. Wish Toyota would have just set us up this way to begin with. Thanks @tonered and all contributors for the thread & it’s contents! Glad I went the dremel route over any of the other methods. It just looks much cleaner up there still appearing OEM.

I think the air worked itself free. After a bit more driving it’s all good now. Overall great results.

Definitely a bit of air was in there. Glad that it worked itself out and you are enjoying the mod.

Ok, after spending more than 20 minutes digging through this thread, can someone please explain the Dremel option in a little bit of detail or point me to a post that talks about it? So, I take the accumulator off, flip it over, and use a Dremel to....???? A little help please :D

Saw just Dremel it down to when you see those 2 holes or are they drilled?

Holes are already there, dremel a channel between them.

What if everyone who wants one of these milled just sells to me at a reasonable price, say $40? When I get 20, I pay to have the batch milled at around $20 each. Then I resell milled accumulators for $80 with $40 core return. Shipping shouldn’t be too bad.

I can proceed with that if it’s one way to get off the ground. No guarantees we can hit 20 but doesn’t look like it’s happening now anyway.

What, @BLtheP said. Just cutting a channel for flow. Going down the size of the holes will get 'er done.

There's a pretty good number, right?

These fit in the USPS Small Flat Rate box. $7.20 these days? About as cheap and fast as it gets.

First class to 1 lb is even less. So very viable to ship around. Flat rate to/from milling will work well to avoid significant cost. Batch size of 20 feels perfect to me. And I have adequate biz cash to front at that level.

I will reach out to people who expressed interest when time permits and start the hoarding process.

Just think what you could do with a mountain of accumulators! The possibilities!

If someone wanted a side business for this, why not make and sell a properly bent and fitted hard brake line with the in-line connector and flared ends? (i.e. replace the accumulator with a hard brake line). It would not cost much to make and would sell well, I think.

Although it's not hard to do, many don't have the double-flare tool nor the desire to bend tubing. Plus you can save the intact accumulator in case you want to return it to factory.

Someone did that, but moved away and stopped.

IMHO, I prefer the dremel mod. But as you can see from the 1st Post, there are several ways to skin this cat.

Exactly my setup from the Trident kit. He got some s from various know-it-alls who felt he was price gouging b/c the raw parts are not expensive and he sold the kit at (what I think is a very reasonable) $85. I think he likely felt it was not worth the effort / worth his time.

From installing that kit I will say it looks less stock than I would ideally want. Granted, it's hidden behind the heat shield so not totally visible and it's not a major concern for me either way. But, it's less "perfect" than a milled accumulator. Also there are more connections involved than swapping an accumulator with a milled one and (this is my opinion) more chance for air to enter the system / more tubing to bleed. I'm sold on the "dummy accumulator" as the optimal solution, no tech would ever know the difference vs stock.

So, for $80 + $40 core return, I'd opt for milled accumulator given what I know now.

Being somewhat OCD, though, I am wary of my own dremel skills on this one. I know I can do it but I'd rather have something milled if I'm going to take the time to swap and bleed as those steps are very labor intensive so I'm happy to pay a little bit more for what is hopefully a more exact and precise solution. I know good work and I know my skills, I'm capable of hitting a 90-95% mark but I can't compete with precision machinist hands and real machining equipment.

OK, so, here is my offer. I will purchase anyone's stock takeoff accumulator for $40 via venmo/paypal to you and you pay shipping to me, DM to take me up on that. If/when I collect 20 of these accumulators, I will arrange milling and send/receive. At that point in time I will offer them for sale in a BST thread with priority to anyone who sold a stock accumulator to me in that first batch. From there the expectation would be that enough people would do a purchase + swap + core return that we could keep the ball rolling and I'll manage the arrangements with the miller. Sell price would be $80 + $5 shipping.

List of potentially interested parties below. Current stock is 1, when we get to 20 I'll send them and start the BST.

I agree that I'd rather have it milled and I'd be interested in being on this list, but my Tacoma is my daily driver so I can't just pull it off and wait an undetermined amount of time :notsure:
