Yeah the rent is killing us. And I’m a handyman so I can fix a lot of stuff myself in a house so we are taking the gamble/plunge. Who knows how it’ll go. All I know is paying $2,000-2,500/month in rent and having to move every year is ridiculously stressful and expensive.

Don't you guys get to write off your mortgage interest? Here it's a no go unless you have the stones for the Smith Maneuver...which I do not in this market lol.

Especially if you're starting from behind, like my house which was almost unlivable. And I dropped 11k on my roof 2 years ago so I dig.

Agreed it is, but what many forget that look at me and say "your mortgage is the same as my 2 bedroom rent if not less" is that they're also paying the taxes and insurance just like I am, it just isn't broken down like that. Though no argument about the cost of rent.

You're also buying long term stability in terms of not being evicted in 30 days for any reason.

    Tis true yes

    Only if you itemize.

I think now you can deduct $12,950 for standard. So youd have to be able to deduct more than that as a single person or double that as married before you can claim it. Even then you only save your federal tax rate.

Most people don’t itemize, and its cheaper just not to pay interest at all. :)

Now in Canada you can only lock your interest rate for up to 5 years max right?

From 212 to 199.0 in 7 days. Water cut complete and weighed in for another comp this morning. Overshot it by a couple pounds actually.

Time to eat. The fun part is the comp had a truck pull event but it’s gonna rain so now there’s a mystery event in its place. Gotta love strongman lol

The whole rent vs. but also greatly depends on what you’re looking for. If you enjoy living in an apartment or small neighborhood with little to no yard (townhouse, whatever) I could see just renting forever. I wasn’t going to be able to rent anywhere with 2+ acres and a shop out back, much less away from everyone like i want. So I had to buy. But I also wouldn’t rent a house, it makes 0 sense to me.

If your whole thing is just to avoid paying interest though, you’re not doing that. Someone else borrowed the money to buy whatever you live in and by you paying them, you’re indirectly paying interest and getting none of the benefit of it. the only difference is that they kept some money set aside to deal with the maintenance as it arises and are now gaining the equity on your dime and a potential slight inconvenience on their part. But anyone who buys a house should keep ~$10k set aside for when those big ticket items pop up.

No, you can get longer guaranteed rates, but they are not usually a good deal unless the world goes to shit. Our central bank has kept rates artificially low for a really long time now so I don't bother with them

    THIS

My friend bought a condo recently in Florida. Said if condos weren't in existence she would just rent an apartment. She's the type on her day off who doesn't want to mow the lawn, paint, etc..nor does she know how to do the stuff. I think she would learn if taught pretty fast but it's just her wish to enjoy the weekend instead. Single lady with no kids and no desire to change any of those things.

I can relate to the pop up..the roof we figured was coming due, but $5K for a new furnace was one surprise long ago..at least it happened right when tax returns came and we got a big one that year.

This is very true. It does depend what you want and do what you want as long as you can afford your preference.

The point about no interest was saying just don’t be in debt and you don’t pay it.

This is why I want to rent. I don’t want to have to take care of everything all the time. Takes time and energy away from my other interests and hobbies.

I hired more work out this year and I’m glad I did. Its worth paying people, its just expensive.

Alright let's get this thread back on topic...

I'm officially 12 weeks out from Great Lakes Strongest 2022!!

I’ve just now started reincorporating strongman implements into my training again and am feeling pretty good aboutit. I always joke that I show up every year about 12% stronger but the comp weights always increase 15% year to year :D Though I don’t think I’m actually showing up any stronger this year, a quick glance at the events may suggest that maximal strength isn’t as important this year:

    Men's Lightweight Open under 181 (82Kg) Class
Axle Clean and Press for reps: 220Lbs
    Sandbag/Zercher Yoke Carry: 220 / 540lbs
    Max 18” deadlift: Starting @455lbs
    Frame carry:530lbs
    Keg over Bar @52": 225lbs

The way I look at this year’s events, winning almost all of them with the exception of DL, comes down to conditioning. Axle C & P requires the competitor to clean each rep, this is a manageable weight so the winner will have to put up 10+ reps in my experience. The Kegs will be similar since it is a loading event with a manageable weight. Sandbag & Zercher yoke and frame carry are both moving events and will come down to who is quickest (duh) but more importantly efficiency and soundness of technique w/ minimum error. So as you see, most of these events don't necessarily reward the strongest competitor, but the most well rounded and well conditioned competitor.

Though having the kiddo seems like a set back, I still may be able to put out a good effort this year. LETS GOOOOOOO:muscleflexing:

I can live with taking care of things, ebb and flow. This year will be busy since we got behind last year on account of her having spinal surgery.

Some things are worth me doing, some not. Money can be an issue in terms of hire vs do, as can knowledge.

you should write a novel, “the chronicles of a lightweight strongman”

Those events look reasonable. Frame might be a bit heavy for the class. Get shum!

HA! Consider chapter 1 done then. Sorry I know I can be long winded sometimes.

Personally I feel like the events are too light for Strongman, but hey, I’ll take what I can get. I also agree that the frame is on the heavier side for LW, but I’ve had to carry frames closer to 700lbs so I wasn’t sweating this one.
