ALWAYS ask for the printout of the before and after specs and check what vehicle they put in computer to get specs at top of sheet. If the vehicle model is correct and the after is all green then there should be no pulling in any direction.

I mean, clearly, there is something up—who knows, maybe an intern wrote those articles, maybe they were written by marketing guys, you see that shit all the time in industry where "reputable" companies aren't always honest or fudge things in their marketing material—I've even seen sales guys try to write white papers (not too pretty). But it's easy to see there are some inconsistencies and errors in both those links. If I do reach out to their engineering depts and ask them what's up with their bad info, I'll be sure to let you know. :)

Seriously, please reach out to them. Would like to see that conversation.

I have dealt with engineers my whole career (nuclear, chemical, electrical, mechanical, and civil) and I just don’t think they would put out bad information like this. Most are very competent…with a few that everyone wants to kick in the uprights.

Reusing u-bolts isn't that big of a deal. If they were that weak there would be rear axles littering the side of the road up and down the highway

Will do, I'll see what they have to say.

I will say though, as an engineer myself, I too have worked with many engineers, and I have seen the entire gamut from engineers that are masters in their field to engineers that I wouldn't trust to design a chopstick.

Op... You have only one option. Your gonna have to science the shit out of it (or you can just back off the nuts, move bolt over bump stop, snug up and torque to spec.)

What about the %&*%*! Toyota engineer that came up with that glove box damper/shock piece of crap. :annoyed:

    It doesn’t, soooo

Go take a screen shot of your maintenance manual for 60/120K miles. If you do any off-road, stop and go traffic, towing, topper/RTT you fall under special operating instructions ( page 45 and 53). Some dealerships like to push not doing maintenance until 120k and why wouldn’t they? The truck is out of warranty (even for platinum coverage of 120k miles/7 years) and you are on the hook for a transmission.

Take it back to the dealership for the repair, you can’t really blame the dealership that’s more of a sloppy mechanic or someone that has no pride in there work.

Incorrect at 60k it says Driving while towing, using a car-top carrier, or heavy vehicle loading, extensive idling and/or low speed driving for a long distance such as police, taxi or door-to-door delivery use as the conditions. So if I never do those, which I don't, the transmission fluid will last forever? My blackstone lab report says differently. That's some bad info those engineers put out.

    edit
Also if read footnote 3 on the page it says "3 Perform these service items only if you drive primarily under the conditions indicated". So being stuck in traffic occasionally or towing once a year doesn't meet those conditions.

Some people take everything so literally. I mean you really don’t need to be a cop taxi, delivery driver to fall under this special service requirement. Even your own testing confirmed this.

If anyone actually believes WS trans fluid will last for the life of the vehicle, they deserve to pay for an early rebuild on their transmission. I also have some beach front property in Colorado at 7550’ of elevation.

This isn't about toyota ws, you said engineers won't put out bad info. The fact that the don't tell us to service this transmission is bad info that the engineers put out. The manual clearly states what they want us to do and that is to never change or service the trans, that some bad info.

I shouldn't need to read between the lines, the engineers should put out good service information from the start. You still said they wouldn't put out bad info, are you saying this isn't bad info, and that I should never service my trans?

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
Let's put this one to bed.

U-bolts "should" be replaced after they have been used. Meaning they have been installed, the truck has been driven, and they are being removed after a period of time.

U-bolts handle a lot of stress as part of their daily routine. Lateral loads, twisting loads etc. If they have been installed for a period of time, they should be replaced.

    HOWEVER

that's not what is going on here. The bolts aren't even being re-"used"... they are basically being re-torqued. To be used, I would expect they would need more than the amount of miles on them that would neccesitate them BEING RE-TORQUED.

U-bolts should be torqued when installed AND THEN re-torqued at around 500 miles anyway, and they should be periodically re-inspected and re-torqued anyway.

OP Does not, by any stretch of the imagination, need to replace brand new U-bolts. It's ridiculous to even suggest it.

The U-bolts are not torque to yeild, they are not torqued anywhere near the maximum value for the diameter of the fastener.

Anyone who says different, is just plain wrong... or in the case of the videos in question... of course the manufacturer of the U-bolts will say to never re-use them... they want to sell you more u-bolts... duh

Dude let it go. All the Toyota engineers have to do is make sure the vehicle makes it past the warranty period. After that they don't care
