I have these little dudes all over the place, and when I'm on the phone I'm usually pacing around in the backyard. They're up on their rocks and cinderblocks doing their push-ups looking all tough trying to scare me away

 

That’s just your insect defense system.

 

Between them and the toads they do a pretty darn good job

 

We have a fuckton of anoles and toads here. Treefrogs too. Do a good job keeping the bugs at bay.

 

Lizard population is holding pretty steady here. Toad population is down at least 90% from last year. Have seen almost no spiders, and not a single yellow jacket nest this year. Whatever is happening to the insects has happened very quickly here in the last year. All we have left is the houseflies and some of the midges that like the grass after it's watered. I leave my porch light on and there's usually a dozen toads hopping around picking up the bugs that cruise by and get disorientated. I've seen 3 in the backyard around the garden, and that's it. None in the front yard.
Lizards are doing ok scooping up the smush ants. Haven't seen a grasshopper in 3 years and they used to be thick here. Maybe a half dozen butterflies each summer. One or two moths and there used to be dozens every evening.

I was in Chicago last week and saw one, just one lightning bug.
