Can’t wait for this 2024 model my 2022 lime pro manual should go up about 25 percent in value as well as my 2021 4runner pro when the new 4 runner arrives.

There’s a guy on this forum who works in the auto industry that has claimed the new Taco will have the new 2.4L 4cyl turbo hybrid from Lexus. I believe it’s currently being used in the new NX350? Has decent specs, great torque numbers assuming Sweers doesn’t fuck up the tune or gear ratios

Way to complex for my taste. Toyota is great at keeping it simple and doing that well. Not so much with all this turbo hybrid garbage. Take a look at the tundra pro engine out of the truck when they had to take body off frame. It’s a mess hoses and wires everywhere and that’s not even with the hybrid. Funny thing is gas mileage improvement is minimal for all this complexity. Can only imagine what the starting price will be. Probably start in same league as the Lexus certainly won’t be cheaper. I was reading about 12 percent higher in the base model and up. The tundra pro is about 15k more than the out going. Im guessing Tacoma pro around 62 plus

Yeah, I agree. I'm not saying the 2gr is unreliable, I would just prefer the 1gr in the tacoma but I get why they did it...ultimately it comes down to emissions.

I would prefer the 2.4 turbo in the next gen compared to the 2gr...more low end torque.

What I would really love is the 3.4 turbo in the new tundra just with a lower tune for the tacoma.

Haha yea I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth. Just trying to add to the convo in favor of the 2GR.

I'm pretty pumped about a turbo'd 2.4L for the Taco, given Toyota has turbo'd their 1KD & 1KZ diesels for the last 30 years. Especially if it's a turbo-hybrid system in the same way the new Tundra is set up where you can "on demand" the hybrid drivetrain when you need it.

Just got around to clicking on that link. I remember seeing that pink 45 somewhere, Alaskan Craigslist or something. Cool history on that, only kinda skimmed…will have to go back and read it more in depth.

Looks like the 4th gen may be a little wider than the third gen.

I wonder if that has to do with the vehicle sharing the same platform as the tundra and land cruiser.

Looks like the new Colorado to me. Didn’t watch too much of the video…found it kinda annoying. When it opens up with a bunch of pictures of some dude on vacation *click close*. :)

You are missing how much more the 3G Tacoma weighs. They got a heavier truck, with greater safety and hauling around more features, with a smaller engine, and still beat the 4.Slow for efficiency. Pretty impressive.

I mean...by the time it comes out 3rd gen will have been out for...? 7 years?

I'd imagine the primary intention is to bring the styling in line with Toyota's current design language.

I am fairly impressed the mpgs I getting out of mine, just averaged 22.7 on the last tank. Could barely squeak out 17 on my 1st Gen. Think the new auto short shifts better than me with the manny in ‘99. Tended to wind it out to 2500-3000, the auto is around 2000 if you aren’t hammering on it.

The difference varies between trims, but in general the 3G Tacoma weighs between approximately 300lbs and 800lbs more, depending on trim package. The biggest spread, when comparing identical trims, is in the 4x4 trucks, with the 3G weighing close to 400lbs heavier.

If you could put the superior 3.5L in the flimsy 2G body, you’d have a real powerhouse with great efficiency.

I'm fully aware the gen 3 weighs more and that's part of the problem, putting a smaller engine into a vehicle with more weight.

You'd think they would figure out a way to drop some weight, they only had like 10 years to do it.

Your post was about MPGs. I don’t know what I’m missing about what you initially said. I reiterate that it’s impressive they get better MPGs, with a smaller engine, and a heavier truck. It’s an achievement.

I'm voting for a full reimagining. PHEV, full independent suspension, portal axles for the 'offroad'...

Think that is the Double Cab and chopped 5’ bed off the Tundy.

Mucking around with the body isn’t anything new from Toyota.

Yes, you're not missing anything. Sure it's impressive, just like any other car manufacturer. Using a smaller displacement engine with more gears, I would hope it would be more efficient. They tuned it to ride at lower rpms.

All I'm saying is it could have been possible with the same updated engine used in the 4runner with added gears.
