All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
    I got a problem.

I get function but it is a diminishing return the more drag you add to the outside of the truck unless you over power the truck. I would be curious to see how many tanks of gas people are running through with all the overlanding stuff mounted to the truck per week/month. Even when I tow either of my boats I still get 16mpg and my truck is currently unmolested. I could only imagine that being cut by at least 1/3 if I had other things mounted.

I actually did the math many years back when I ran a RTT on my truck full time; for a rough example, here was my thought process:

    (60 miles/day) x (5 days/week) x (52 weeks/yr) = 15,600 miles/yr
    15,600 miles at 19mpg with gas at $2.50/gal = $2,052/yr
    15,600 miles at 16mpg with gas at $2.50/gal = $2,437/yr

It cost $385 more per year in gas mileage to leave a RTT, awning, armor, lift, wheels/tires, etc (if gas is at $2.50/gal).
To be fair, gas isn't $2.50 anymore, so here's something more realistic:

    (60 miles/day) x (5 days/week) x (52 weeks/yr) = 15,600 miles/yr
    15,600 miles at 19mpg with gas at $4/gal = $3,284/yr
    15,600 miles at 16mpg with gas at $4/gal = $3,900/yr

It cost $616 more per year in gas mileage to leave a RTT, awning, armor, lift, wheels/tires, etc (if gas is at $4/gal).
Obviously, driving 25k+miles/year may not yield the same numbers, but for most people who drive 20k miles or less per year, its not a catastrophic impact. Thats probably close to 1 month's truck payment for many.

    (60 miles/day) x (7 days/week) x (52 weeks/yr) = 21,840 miles/yr
    21,840 miles at 19mpg with gas at $4/gal = $4597.89/yr
    21,840 miles at 16mpg with gas at $4/gal = $5460/yr

That is an $862 difference going at seven days a week. That is a pretty nice weekend vacation's worth of money for example.

I have the Silver Bullet, a 01 25rs JDM and two jet boats. I understand.

FIFY  Kidding; like I said, mileage may vary and it won't be worth it for every single person. I was just throwing out some random numbers as an example to answer your question honestly. Gas was $2.50 or less when I was running a RTT, so it wasn't a huge impact. We justify our wants in many many ways. If I had to justify a RTT/camper shell/GFC/etc, and I drove your kind of mileage, I'd say that $862/12=$71.83/month is the number I'm interested in. I wouldn't expect for it to pay for itself, but if I used it once per month INSTEAD of a hotel room, I'd probably have $50 saved (to put towards other truck mods of course):anonymous:

I’m looking for a tan one. Out of curiosity, how long did it take for Softtopper to ship it to you after the order? I’ve heard it’s down to a couple weeks but no idea if that’s true. Thanks!

Oh I totally understand. LOL I justify hauling two jet boats around so I get it. I drive my truck daily as well as my Subie and I only run non-ethanol in ALL of them so my gas expense is automatically higher as is.

I am torn on getting a soft vs hard top myself.

    ****SOLD****

    2008 KTM 690 Enduro
    ~23k miles
    Asking $4,500 obo
    Location: Atlanta

This bike is built with just about every upgrade. Has a lot of Rally Raid parts like dual tanks, and a large fairing for Nav and other accessories. Even loaded with Baja Designs Squadrons!

These are tanks and basically indestructible. Great dual sport bike, works well on FSRs or some harder enduro.
I have even taken this bike on single track, with no problems.

Motor pulls like a tractor and the throttle is very linear. No craziness, just predicable.

For those interested I can send you a list of all the additions made to this bike.
