There are multiple ways going about fixing it. Adjustment of the programming is easy and relatively inexpensive. Replacing the final drive is probably better but more costly. One thing I did notice is the transmission seems quicker to decide to downshift if cruise control is on vs off. Probably partially due to how steady I am on the peddle vs cruise control or me acting before I reach a hill vs cruise reacting. Only true for minor hills. Still wants to walk the gears on the steeper grades. It probably doesn't help mine is an SR5 with the TRD wheels (X-series package) with aggressive tread vs the normal street tires these trucks usually get.

Well, if putting on 2 - 2 inch blind spot mirrors, 4 visors on the side windows, adding 50 lbs of gear in a 24 gal tote, putting in 4 j hooks with a few long handle tools and hauling my 230 lbs butt is considered modding enough to make it downshift often then yes I am bitching about shit I bolted/strapped/sat into/onto my truck.

Actually, these trucks aren't that bad. Toyota is trying to give them a little fuel efficiency.

thanks for the laugh. needed it today. raining all damned day here in ga.

Just did camping trip a couple weekends ago. Pulling a loaded 2000 lbs moto trailer, roughly 500-600 lbs in the bed, me another 165 lbs…felt fine to me, more than enough power, trans didn’t feel like it was shifting all that much…all the while getting 21 mpg average for the trip up into the mountains and back.

I was just making a joke. It's pretty hard to beat. Nothing else in the same market would I take over my Tacoma. Well, I'd prefer the DCLB but that wasn't a choice in 2021 and I'm not about to throw away a perfectly good truck for the little the LB would offer :annoyed:

I love my '22 3rd Gen Access Cab 6MT. Power level seems fine - if I wanted a fast truck I would have considered the TRX or Raptor.

I voted option 4. Maybe not a perfect truck but I'm not sure that exists anyways. Only the ZR2 Colorado was in the running, when I was shopping. That being said, I love the look of the 3rd-gen, it's the perfect size for me (DCLB) and fits my lifestyle. I don't mind the interior either. It has enough gadgets to feel modern enough w/o being overkill, for me. I like that about Toyotas in general. They are simple enough. But I know some people like a fancier interior and whatnot. The shifting is a bit odd in some situations but other than that, have no real complaints. I want to keep it for a long time.

Just jumped from a 05 Tundra to a 22 Tacoma. Guess I’ll find out, but if it’s anything like the Tundra, it’s going to be indestructible. Shocked at how much you get on a base truck now. Decent tech especially when combined with a phone, safety warning stuff. I even ended up with dual climate. Wish it read out the tire pressure but I discovered the app ($$$) and that’s cool. Also, blind spot would have been better than lane departure if I had a choice but it’s not like I had it before.

Happy with week 1. Just finished putting on some running boards and bug deflector. New wheels and tread next week should have her looking good.

After putting on 35s and wheeling with a diesel FJ80 Land Cruiser and a LR Defender 90 (both on 35s), I prefer to be in my 3rd gen.

There is a saying “democracy is the worst form of government – except for all the others” Winston Churchill. While the 3rd gen Tacoma is certainly not perfect, it is perhaps, the best choice in a sea of mediocre choices.

Both frontier gens have more power than the current 3rd gen tacoma, a marginally roomier significantly comfier back seat both... the nissan 4.0 could get me 23 if I was easy on the highway the nissan 3.8 is getting 21 pretty consistently passing traffic, its 10 speed is finominal, havnt towed with it yet but the 4.0 with 6/7k lbs could cruise at 65/70 just fine and felt like it had more power to give even up hills

The 3rd gens tacoma interior was fresher (not nicer or higher quality) than the 2nd gen frontier interior but the 3rd gen frontier interior blows the doors off the 3rd gen tacoma interior

At this point there's no reason to get a tacoma when the nissan has more power, gets better mpg, has a nicer interior and comfier back seat with 10 speeds at which the engine is delivering peak mpg or torque

I test drove a handful of 3rd gens since 2016... wanted to like them but toyota really dropped the ball

    >when you don't know what an overdrive gear is

Just sell the damn truck while the prices are high and buy the damn jeep you keep stroking over. You'll figure out you'll *still need a regear* pretty quick for how much you've humped the vehicle, but then you can bitch on the jeep forums instead.

Have a 1st Gen too, like the 3rd better. Though would be curious of putting the drive train out of the new truck into the old. 1st Gens are around 600-700 pounds lighter, boost payload to where it should be (1500-1700 lbs, why I voted for #4, payload on the 3rd is dismal) and should bump up the mpgs too, plus be a rocket ship.

Had one and liked it, wont say I liked it more than I like my 3rd gen because I dont but to each his own. It was rough and 12 hours on the road was tiring.
