Im getting an aluminum skid to thwart the catalytic convert thieves.
Do you guys paint the aluminum the same as steel? Same process?
Green pad/ acetone/ primer/ rattle can

Im to lazy too google, plus you guys are real life experience..

Tacoma's are relatively low on the totem pole for CAT theft. As long are you don't own a hybrid or Honda CRV, Hyundai SantaFe/Santacruz/Tucsan (Basically any compact SUV the has easy access underneath and some hybrid tech), shouldn't have much to worry about.

That being said, I support your skid decision anyways lol

Ive been tryin to decide, i just figured its 350$
Less than a new converter.
Theyve been coming up missing around here, so just being proactive.
Plus i get a new skid

 

Which one are you getting? I went through the research process and then finally secured a parking spot in a locked garage, so didn't follow through getting one.

Relatively low, but the ease of access and having four cats on a 2nd gen (and maybe 3rd gen) make it still worth a thief to try to get them.

Ah, I didn't see that one in my research, but it looks like it actually does cover the cats, unlike some other "cat shields" and definitely way more than some people's ideas of just getting the RCI trans skid, which still gives you 98% access to the cats.

 

Didn't BAMF just start selling one? I know a main stream vendor did recently, just can't remember which.

I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, just that the crime statistic's themselves, show low amounts of theft from Tacoma's compared to other vehicles. (My truck is parked in a garage so)

 

With the RCI trans skid cat protection add on, I think they're pretty well protected.

Maybe it was RCI I was thinking of, as much as I don't really like RCI stuff.

Also, your skids are too clean, they need more gouges/dent's/rust

That's the goal! I had one stollen off of my '06 Tacoma in my apartment complex's parking lot last year. That royally sucked, so this should do the trick by making it way harder for them than they'd like.

Yup. Cat prices have sky rocketed. A lot of the cars I take reports on for stolen cat's are worth less than the cost of a new converter. Had one stolen off a Honda the other week, dealer estimated at least 6 months to get one in.

 

So id say i made good move.

 

So if i wire wheel these rust spots off.
Do i need to primer before rattle can??
Or will rattle can be sufficient?

 

Primer it. Epoxy is the best, or self etching

Did you use pilot holes? What size drill bit?

Before I get roasted for this my brother’s tundra has a similar amount of play in his rack and it’s new and OEM Toyota. With most of my front end being new I feel like this has to be it. Any additional input would be appreciated as always. Thanks all
