lol, California, Washington and Oregon will have to remove the motes from their own eyes before seeing and pointing out the transgressions of other states :D

Automatic here, and gas prices, while far too high, are a LOT lower than Washington lol.

Lol…ya, gas prices are more here on the west coast. Why you ask? Well as socialist, no, I believe you call us communist! Oh well…Our states have higher taxes on fuel. The revenue from the fuel taxes funds the highways and bridges that are built and repaired in a safe and pragmatic manner unlike other states that insist that government and taxes are a unnecessary burden to the people. Consequently infrastructure becomes vulnerable to the elements and fails…. And people suffer! We on the west coast make an effort to protect every one that resides here and visitors as well! Lol

I Have cousins who lived in California, drove through there and stayed with them a weekend on an around the North American continent truck camping trip years ago. Beautiful state! I hope we fix it one day and so do they haha :D
I try to avoid name calling but I do defend the southern states! :D
Actually I’ve found rural folks in any state are pretty much like those of us who are more rural/suburban in the south, we live on common ground. :)

As far as gas taxes and roads go you may want to Google “states with worst roads” you might be surprised where NC and Washington, California and other states are in the rankings! Some sites include public transportation etc but for pure roads and highways:
    https://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/us-road-conditions.html

And for the most cost effective state highway systems (yes that matters!):

    Morning all:

As for roads, PA has one of the highest gas taxes in the nation and our roads and bridges sure aren't what they should be!

I drove manuals for most of my life but am now down to only one in my 66 Chevy. I would also have a Chevy truck with a manual, but I couldn't order that truck with a 4 or 5 spd., it was not available! When I started to drive Toyotas, two 4-rnrs and 2 Tacoma's were manual, then I decided to go to automatic and probably will stay with the automatics for the duration!

I visited some friends in a small town outside Erie and found the people there some of the friendliest I’ve met. My first experience with Jenny cream ale (Genesee) and came home with a case of it lol. Though Ive also spent time for work in and around Pittsburgh and thought the same.
I drove a lot of manuals in my younger years including owning full size GMC and F150 trucks. As I’ve grown older I love automatics now.

:pccoffee: Good Morning Porch Pals & Gal! Going to break more records today, and I have an old frig to get out of the way. At least I took advantage of the free delivery on the new one. So, empty and move it this morning; should be all back in place this afternoon at some point. As hot as it's going to get, that's my only chore I'm paying attention to today.

No more manuals around here - been quite a few years. But the last one was our 88 "Xtra Cab" Toyota Pickup. Miss that little critter!

I think the freeze thaw cycles are probably the problem for the northern state roads. I read an article a while back about newer road construction technologies in European countries. Here in NC and likely most other states they are repaving roads every few years using the same tar and gravel construction since forever and that has to be costly. Maybe one day we will move into better road construction technology here in the US.

We travel to PA once a year or so, my wife is from PA and still has family and friends there. Hate to admit it but every time we’re there I comment on how much the roads and road system suck. I like PA, beautiful state but yeh the roads suck.

I learned to drive on a manual 56 ford p/u. I don’t own a manual now but have owned many. A few include 65 Dodge p/u, 76 Ford p/u, 67 Chevy SS, 67 GTO, 68 xke Jaguar , 65 corvette, 87 Corvette , 86 Toyota MR2, 91 4Runner. There are others also, too many to list. I love manual shifts but haven’t had one in many years. My wife doesn’t drive manual shifts so I stopped buying them several years ago. I was recently contemplating buying a new corvette with a manual (unbeknownst to my wife) but when I went looking at them I found at 73 with back problems getting in and out of them is a major undertaking and I knew it would only get worse. Guess I’ll just stick with my Taco and our Highlander.

I drove only stick shifts for years. SWMBO has knee problems, so her cars have been automatics for several years. My knee gave me problems a couple of years ago, so I bought a new Tacoma with auto. Gas mileage has always been important to me, and stick shifts have always been more efficient. The new Tacoma is close to the last Tacoma (09 4 banger), but not quite.

My wife and I joke "we've never learned how to drive a car with an automatic transmission"; of the 30+ cars we've owned over the decades, other than our two family minivans when the kids were little, every car has had three pedals under the dash. I currently have a deposit down on a 2022 TRD Sport 6MT, which, if it ever gets built, will most likely end up as a 2023 model; so hopefully the trend will continue.

With the above said, if Toyota ends up not building a new Tacoma to meet my requirements, I may just skip the truck angle for my next vehicle and do something like a new Cayman or M3.

 That's only one of MANY, MANY more! Over the years I have driven on better dirt roads than some of our paved highways! :(
