Yep, but the locker only comes with the TRD "package" correct?

That's what the package will consist of, yep!

Think tires and the yellow billies as well.

Oh and a cool decal :angrygirl:

IIRC the Tokico blues are what you'll find on non-TRD vehicles?

Kind of funny how they did that for Tacomas but for 4Runners, you didn't get a decal and you still got the Black Tokico shocks with, or without getting a locker.

Oh yeah, graphics! I forgot about their performance enhancing abilities.

I'm derailing again. A non TRD package makes it easier to convert to 4x4 and a TRD is the same with yellow shocks, stickers and a locker? Just asking because I've seen a few nice prerunners around here with no rust. Probably new transplants from SoCal and will likely be getting rid of them when the snow hits later this year. Never paid too much attention to them before but adding 4x4 doesn't look difficult.

Prerunners can get converted to 4x4 easily, and a TRD package changes nothing at all (regarding the conversion).

Parts, specifically transmission and certain transfer cases, are the only difficult parts to locate. Everything else is easy, and easily swapped.

What I'm seeing is transfer case ID and trans matching is somewhat difficult.

For autos, you just need to match the motor it came from as the input gears have a different spline count from an I4 vs a V6.

I'm not familiar with manuals though.

And if your truck is a 2003-04, you'll need a transmission from either of those years due to the drive-by-wire setup in the last 2 years of the 1st Gen.

Same applies for the 3rd Gen 4Runner; 2001-02 are drive-by-wire.

If he is asking the best way to spend his 4K on susp. there is no way he is converting it to 4wd for 4k.

You're right, he'll be doing it for a lot less.

How much will you charge him for you to do it including labor and parts?

    I wouldn't charge anything.

If the OP had the parts, and lived nearby, I'd gladly head over with tools and say let's get this shit done; just make sure there's pizza and beer.

I've helped a lot of people work on their vehicles, and I've had the pleasure in partaking in mod parties where my vehicle was worked on as well.

No money involved. Just a bunch of dudes (or gals) hanging out enjoying a hobby we all share.

As for parts? Oh man, I don't know where to start. I've had my hands on over 8-10 cv axles, many of them OEM (still have one in storage as we speak). I had a front diff I even threw away (fully functional), several pairs of manual hubs (both new, and sets I rebuilt), and more.

I was only a transmission and transfer case away but after I bought a 4Runner, I had no need. Since then I've seen them come up for as little as $2-400 on FB Marketplace.

So yes, it can be done easily and for cheap. Didn't even discuss the parts that can be reused such as spindles that just need the axle hubs pressed out, and new ones pressed in, or the output shaft being swapped on an auto, and more...

Don't bother with the 5100 set up then, you'll still feel them pretty bad.

Splurge and get some comfort plus serious off road capability with something like FOX, Icon, or KINGS suspension. You really can't go wrong with them as many members here will attest. They have the added reservoir which really helps with minimizing the bumpiness on potholes and bad roads
