Rust on Frame with A/C drain mod fix

Just double checking

 

Looks like the hose directly from the condenser may have a kink in it. I used a 90 degree elbow to connect my drain hose to get around that. Hard to tell really if your hose is kinked or not from the angle of the shot, but I think I see a slight kink.

 

Did this mod yesterday. Used a 1/2 90 degree PEX connector and 1/2 ID heater hose from ACE. Took the simple and direct route. I will have to reinforce / zip tie the hose as it exits the splash shield. BTW the NAPA Balkamp push rivets fit perfectly in the holes for the splash shield (and for the radiator shield,I used these on my 2nd gen), are reusable and are more snug in the holes. The ones on the splash shield snapped upon removal - perhaps due to my impatience.

 

Thanks for this tip. Just completed. Less than 500 miles and already sprayed with rust proofing but cheap and easy PM.

And following the TSB, Taco's should be repair procedure B which should be plug and play, no cutting or anything.

 

I just did this mod as well on my 22 Tacoma. I've only had it for a couple of weeks, but thought its very cheap insurance, and it gave me a chance to get to know my truck a little better. Now off to NAPA to get those replacement clips that @jneutron was nice enough to upload a photo of. $7.50 for a package, whatever number that is. Thanks to all !

 

I used a 1/2" Pex connector, fit perfectly in the A/C drain tube (no clamp or zip tie needed), I attached the other end to a 1/2" ID clear vinyl tube (did need a zip tie there) and ran it down to the frame and back (zip tied it in two locations)

 

Question for everyone, is there any worry about the water freezing in the extended hose and backing up the system? I live in Minnesota, it gets very cold in the winter...

 

Living in Alaska this was my concern as well. The beginning of the extended line should be plenty warm from the engine, but I used clear hose to be able to check in on it from time to time

 

Does this part solve the issue of rust? In particular is the replacement long enough to bypass the frame rail?

 

I did this to my new truck last week. I shoved the new hose all the way over the existing small hose and clamped down slightly. It’s been working great, the only issue I have is that I ran my hose according to a YouTube video I found, and the final run of hose is a little too straight so some water sits in the pipe. After starting and driving the momentum pushes the excess water out. I also park on a slight incline so I’m not too concerned. Great simple fix!

 

Is this really necessary. Seems like a little Black Rust-Oleum once a year would do the trick

 

1 can of that is more $$ than this fix, even if it did work.

New truck, finally got around to doing this mod. Cheap peace of mind. I used a 1/2” pex connector and 1/2” vinyl tube. A few zip ties to tidy up and keep away from the exhaust. Works great already. In fear of breaking the clips that hold the dust cover I ended up doing the whole job from underneath the truck and was actually quite easy.

 

If your truck was built/in-transit after the TSB related to this, is it safe to assume no need to do this anymore? Hard to believe such a basic design flaw would be present for so long.

 

I'll let you know. Picked up my truck 2 days ago. Doing it this weekend.
