I know it's been discussed here before as we all love tacos. It's a requirement higher on the list than the love of midgets.

Last weekend I stopped in a Mexican Restaurant and was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was so I felt the need to share.

I'll admit, that I have limited my Mexican food intake for lunch and refused to go out for dinner because I'm always underwhelmed. This makes me sad as I love spicy southwestern cuisine. I'm partial to Sonoran but I also like the green chili-based New Mexican or fresh Baja or beef-forward Tex-Mex. So when my dad suggested stopping in for Mexican after a long day on the road I was game to try, under one condition. No chains. So we pulled off the I-40 onto Butler and cruised up to 66. My pop graduated from NAU in the 60s and remembered that was always a good stop to cruise for one reason or another. Well, we saw a neon sign reading "Mexcian Restaurant" and the parking lot was full. The name was not instantly recognizable so I was fairly certain it was not a chain. We walked inside and what a cool place. Filled with local art and interesting-looking booths. We were seated at the back, the only open table, and ordered a few beers. I ordered the chimichanga and my dad had the Grande Burrito green chili with pork. As the waitress brought over our plates, both dishes looked amazing and with nothing left but to dive in, this would confirm our decision one way or another. Wow! The spice was right and cooked to perfection. No bland boiled meat with Macayo's canned sauce on these plates. The tortillas were soft but not mushy or dry for that matter. This was a damn tasty meal. I kid you not, my pops was scraping the bowl that was a side of green chilis and said, "I'm not letting any of these go to waste." I have to say it solidified our decision to not eat out at chains. I know there are exceptions, and everyone has their favorite, but this is my review. Sadly, running high on the memory from up north, we stopped again at a non-chain restaurant down here in Phoenix. As hard as it is here to find great Mexican, it's even harder in small-town CO where my dad is, so it's always his first request. But yet again, I had a plate I wouldn't feed to my dogs and could only remember the magnificent dish I had in Flag but a few nights before.

If your passing through Flag and have the time to enjoy a solid pate of Mexican food, stop in at Martannes Burrito Palace. Northside of 66 across from the train depot. I might even go as far as to say, it's worth the drive.

Did a little edit. Yes, and especially for lunch-ish breakfast after a Humphrey's hike.

In the southern realm, kind of a fan of Revolu Taco - you know, taco in the name and all.

I'd give a super positive review of Zia Taqueria in Durango, ColoRADo. It's a must stop, be there before they close, type of place. Either uptown or downtown. Downtown for the upstairs deck area.

Martannes was good when I tried it. It was brunch when I went. Wish I could have tried their dinner.

I am having tacos for lunch today with all this mexican talk.

Nice, I imagine even if I really like Martannes, I'll still want to hit Salsa Brava, its the smoker and smoked versions of all the dishes I like so much.

Personally I prefer tacos Los Altos but they are closed the month of July so I guess I’m not getting Mexican for a few more weeks
