Exhaust question……..I have 2 vibrant resonators connected to my muffler. Would it be quieter if I had 1 resonator to a cat before my muffler?

i wouldnt put it that close to cat like heat with only a hope of dropping volume. the metal is thin, with very little gain. a different muffler may be the easier/more beneficial way.

There is a "turbo" passenger engine mount for the E36, and maybe the E46. So it is possible for the inline engines. One in front of the shock tower, and one under the engine mount. It would be tight like a Lancia Delta's engine bay.

Are you having sound issues with your configuration? Mine has been good and we have pretty much the same setup.

I’ve had 2 resonators prior to my muffler for a while. My last set up was to a stainless works turbo muffler. Sounded good but I still had a little bit of that rattle can sound at 2700-2900 rpm’s. I wanted to rid myself of that with my new magnaflow xmod muffler, which I did. However, it is louder. Sounds good, I like it, but I know I’m gonna want to quiet it down at some point.

are the thermostats most of you run require the urd adapter aluminum spacer? or is that plug and play?
meaning anything other than a thermo kit from urd.

I am using the MotoRad thermo from page 1. Does not require the URD adapter.

I went from the urd thermo to the Motorad one. Easier for me to pass a visual check for CARB while accomplishing the desired result.

Thermostats are not looked at as performance mods nor are they recognized as smog control devices despite the fact that they can alter fuel control if they are not working correctly.

As a smog tech I was never worried about thermostat housings or aftermarket yada yada this and that because they don't require EO numbers therefore it's not an item that warrants failing visual if aftermarket or modified.

    EDIT:

Parts coming for sale soon (S/C service kit w/ plugs and belt, 2.8" Pulley, Snout cutter, I/C Reservoir, and maybe cam gears.) All TBD, as I still need to inventory what I have in the garage. I'm keeping the y-pipe for my son's future truck.

some thoughts, just wanted to share for you to ponder in your decision for your truck:

Do you have any cats on it now? If not, I'd consider a cat right after the Y-pipe merge instead of one of your resonators. If only using one cat, closer to the merge is better I think, where the exhaust gasses are hotter. if you don't have a fancy y-pipe that crosses over under the trans, then one smaller cat on each side would be even better. That will quiet it down a lot. Lots of folks will hate on that idea as they feel cats are a giant restriction. I'm not so convinced that a properly sized and functioning high flow cat in an otherwise well built exhaust would show up in a dyno back to back. certainly not a butt dyno. Normally when people take cats off, they are also changing something else, like diameter or length (or getting rid of a clogged/restrictive cat), which will change things and all bets are off with my dyno statement.

Another direction, is to put a muffling device or resonator after the axle, closer to exhaust tip. Where is your exhaust cut now? Longer is quieter, so if you dump before axle, or right after, it will get quieter just by routing it all the way to the back. If you don't have a spare tire, consider a muffler/resonator or even a glasspack cherrybomb type of thing back there, under the bed, and route tip back to the bumper not out the side.

Good info. So, I have no cats and this annoyance started when I rid myself of the high flow cats/shorty headers and went to longtubes. I do have the JFR y-pipe as well. After the y-pipe, it goes to back to back resonators followed by my muffler. My tail pipe is only a couple feet long if that and cuts off at the rear leaf spring. When I put on the icon rxt leaf pack, it forced me to do this. Prior to the new leaf pack I did have a full tail pipe. My thinking was to do what you said and try a cat after the y-pipe….to a resonator….to the muffler.

Do you have a tire under the bed? If that is an option, routing the exhaust to the back and putting a muffling device within about 12" of the tip would really help too. Instead of stacking all the chambers up right after the y-pipe.
