Yup, they are different. My 96 is a 2wd. I made the mistake of ordering a 4wd Corner light. But because of money,I just have to deal with it. It doesn't fit at all. If I could figure out how to post pictures from this new fangled phone I'd show you how bad it fits.

There we go- I'll post it from my computer.

Yeah, it really sucks. I have to keep messing with it to make sure it doesn't come loose, because the screw holes don't line up. I'm surprised the inspection guy passed it last year, as loose as it is.

I only see it being a problem with the older models like 96s I bought the exact same 2wd corners when I recently redid my retro and they fit fine

Here is the lo-down on the variations of the corner laps, and the different year/models.

In 1997 Toyota was in the midst of their first design "change" of the 1st gen Tacoma. In the 1995.5 through 1996 the corner lamp was affixed by two screws, along with a tab for the bottom of the grille, and a push-pin for the top of the grille. In 1998 the grille and headlights changed over to the newer 1st gen design. This brought forth the new grille, and composite headlights. THOSE side marker housings were attached by a snap pin, and alignment dowel, and the push pin for the top of the grille. (no screws)
1997 was the oddball. If you had a 4wd model, it had the older style grille, headlights, and side marker. IF you had the 2wd model, it had the newer style grille, headlights, and side marker. So the ones on the eBay page linked should fit all 1st gens that have composite headlights. They won't fit the 1997 4WD models, or ANY of the 1995.5 or 1996 models.

Fenwick, the side markers I have on my truck right now are identical to yours. I am willing to bet I could get them to fit. The ones I bought were from a 1996 2wd truck. So if those fit my truck, then it stands to reason that the ones from a 4wd should fit yours. The trick is getting them lined up. I had to finesse mine into place to get them to fit, but now they fit perfectly. If you are interested, pull yours out and post a photo of the corner area of your fender and grille, as well as a couple of pictures of the back side of the corner lens. I think I can help you get yours to fit, if you are willing to try.

I'm really confused reading all this. I have a 99 Tacoma 2wd and I'm looking to replace the corner lights. Are the 2wd and 4wd corner lights the same for my year?

Also, how about the bumper lights, I'm lookin to replace the beat up orange ones with a nice set of clears. What year bumper lights will work on my 2wd non pre runner Tacoma

    Thanks

    Mark-

sorry to bump an old thread, but i'm collecting parts to finish my 95.5-97 4wd front end swap and i thought the ones i have now (0-1-04 clears would be fine). i need a new set anyways because water got into my driver side but now i'm second guessing what set to buy after you said the 97 was weird. the grille i picked up is off a 97 4wd can you let me know what will fit? the only clear ones available on ebay were for 95-96 2wd models and 01-04

Post a picture of your grille and the lights that you plan to put on the truck. Easiest way to tell what will work and what won’t.

also keep in mind i have an 01-04 front so id probably have to buy screws as well assuming it already has the screw holes. if not i think i can keep my original 01-04 corners? i believe i read that somewhere in a front end swap thread
