I just used a T into the line going to the factory overflow bottle. I did pick up a cheap aluminum reservoir from Amazon but had no place to put it when the battery was in its original location. Haven't looked at putting it in since moving the battery. Waiting on a Treadstone mani that more than likely will never show up before I start changing things again.

 

Sweet, I was eyeing that 118, looks like it will fit even with my skinny grille. Gonna give a closer look to the Type 13 intercooler core, it's a bit tight under there with the 5VZ.

 

I don't think it would have fit without the 1" body lift I have. Mine sits directly on top of the valve cover though.

 

I have a couple large under hood voids right now where it might be easier to put the intercooler core. I am thinking either where the batter usually goes or in the back corner under the wiper motor area.

 

@Digiratus , I've been burning through Undaunted Courage over the last few weeks and has it ever made me want to get back on the Lolo and explore that area with a different perspective than 18yr old Ben just out off roading.

@turbodb , when you had your caliper fail in Idaho in 2019, you took the caliper off the spindle and then zip tied it up in the fender. I got to thinking about it. Why not remove the brake pads and pinch off the break line? Is there a reason that wouldn't have worked?

 

Looking back now, I think pinching the break line may have worked just fine. At the time, I didn't really know as much, and so that never even crossed my mind. At the time - and even now to an extent - I probably would have worried if pinching the line would damage the stainless steel, and make it so I had two things to replace rather than just one.

...when it happened, I think I texted Zane, and told him what I was planning to do, just to see what he thought. I'm pretty sure he said that it seemed like a good plan, and also (like you) mentioned that if my plan didn't work, that I could remove the caliper altogether and pinch the line (or at least, that's how I understood it at the time).

Oh, and I'm not sure if I carried vise grips in my OSK at the time. (He says, as he heads out to see if there are any now...)

I only brought it up because it is fun to insert yourself into a situation and ponder alternatives, which is 100% easier to do sitting at a desk avoiding work than in the moment. But things break and having spent some time thinking of alternatives is something that may be useful down the road.

I could annoy my wife with all the facts along the way! Reality is I've got an itch to straddle the Missouri, go through Lemhi and then run the Lolo. That can be done in a long weekend I bet.

 

Is the Lolo open? I know the Magruder wasn't due to snow until pretty recent if even at all.

 

From Weippe, across Lemhi and all the way to Clark Canyon reservoir on I-15 would be fun and easily doable. What would be very interesting would be a dirt route to that reservoir from the three rivers area. But that might be a tall task because, unlike Lolo, that area in MT is so developed.

Probably soon. Typically the 2nd half of July sometime it opens up.

 

I am not sure. Snow is at around 8k feet on the north slopes down here a couple weekends ago so it should be getting open soon.

My brain thinks of as an east to West journey, but either way that would be a lot of fun. I need to familiarize myself with that route again and see what a modern crossing looks like. I've just been looking at pictures, not so much actual mapping a true route I wouldn't mind spending a couple nights along the Lolo and do some more exploring of any side roads or hikes. If labor day is open for you I can get more serious about planning something and get a group going.

 

ATM, Labor Day weekend is open for me. East to west or west to east. Either way works. Calendar marked.

 

How is Weippe pronounced? Brett and I stopped at the old Elkhorn Tavern to embrace the local culture when driving through last summer.

 

All the culture! The campsite that night made for a good adventure!

We really need to plan our 'overlanding to middle of nowhere bars' trip. The one in Warren will be hard to beat!

 

That's another spot on my list in my quickly fading summer lol did you happen to make the 15 mile trek to the east of Warren to Smith Knob by chance?

 

Looks like we drove right past that road on our way down to the river. Next time.

Were you able to get all the way to edwardsburg? Maybe that wasnt on your agenda. It's part of the loop I've been considering, start in McCall and drop out in Cascade for 160mile route.

 

Yes, we did that whole loop clockwise starting and ending at Ryan's. Nothing but dirt roads, but I would do it again. There's obviously tons of offshoots though, so I'm sure there's plenty of interesting stuff we drove right past. We were too busy fishing most of that loop.

 

I like dirty roads luckily. I spy a couple lookouts along that route too. I believe Dan has this section of the BDR documented well too. Thanks for the feedback.
