I have an 08 TRD stock , looking to put new wheels and tires on it without adding a lift kit. This is my sons and he’s on a budget. What is the largest wheel and tire combo he can purchase that will look good ( all terrain) without adding a lift kit. I don’t mind trimming the wheel well etc. Any suggestions are appreciated and websites

I saw a post where someone installed 255/75/17 with no issues on 3rd gen take offs.

You will need to trim and cut for 285. With 18" you can probably go with 70-18 on 3rd gen take offs.

There are more tire choices in 17s.

I would also recommend some take offs from a 3rd gen or even the 4runners. I just got new wheels and tires a few months ago . Stock size tire and 17” trd rims482201D5-13AE-4395-97E2-AF04F04C4392.jpg

I second TACOMA2NDGEN. I found some 4 Runner 17” takeoffs and put on 265/70 R17 Wrangler Duratracs. It’ll give the truck 1/2” raise and doesn’t require a lot of, if any, trimming of the wheel wells. If you do a search you’ll find a lot of content on this site covering this in detail. 9CA17312-8AC0-4869-A791-E835C133EDC0.jpg

If you want something that grips the bead to air down off road there’s only two manufacturers that make that which is Method (bead grip tech models) and Icon; I forget what icons version is called

if you’re gonna spend money on wheels. Depending on how much. Probably might as well get those.

if bead grip is not a priority, there’s a lot more to pick from. TRD Rock Warriors look good, as do 2nd gen TRD Pro 16’s; both are somewhat hard to find.
17” will clear a bigger brake if upgrading to 4runner calipers later

    there’s 31” 265/70r17
33” tall skinny 255/80r17 which may only come in heavy load E. Or regular 285/70r17
Larger than that is 35, 37
The larger and heavier tire you go the worse MPG gets and the more you’ll need to regear it

Which brakes are bigger? The 4runner or the Lexus GX470 because I saw that you can run both with 17" rims?

I’ve heard they’re the same. There’s probably a 4 digit code they have on the caliper to identify listed in the DIY thread.
The two I found on eBay for cheap the other day are too rusty to tell

255/75r17 with 3rd gen wheel. I have a 3rd gen suspension. It give 1inch lift in front. As you can see, its a tight fit in rear at full flex. I think it will rub if you have wheel with offset

How are you looking at sitting at the fender line?
Wheels Even at fender line or out past?
Can’t make out fully on the photo
Sorry to ask and thanks for the quick reply
Again, really appreciated in helping out. Means a lot
    Thanks

I have those, I had to remove the front little aerodymanic flap in front of the wheel as my tires have really aggressive tread. They sit about flush with the fender line
