I can attest that my eyes have seen some scary rest rooms in gas stations.
Me and my mates were on a very long road trip. We stopped for gas at this place in either Mississippi or Alabama, I don't remember. The sights and the smell are something that I will never forget. I didn't touch a thing, except the door to get out. I was debating on burning my shoes.

Yeah... I imagine before the modification (or shall I call it an upgrade...), you were to stand on the pads, squat, and let 'er rip... Now, I wonder how one flushes / hoses down this thing, both before and after.

We are really spoiled when it comes to indoor plumbing.

Even our outhouses are fancy compared to all but the really high end public restrooms in Europe .

In Netherlands, there are open outdoor piss stations around and about, including one right next to the Anne Frank house.

Had unisex (no his & hers) "hole in the ground with a foot pad on either side" bathrooms all over S.E. Asia. Works just as you described. Usually a bucket of water with a small scoop or bowl to wash where you missed the hole. Was no flushing. Just as you don't flush in outhouses from days or yore. (or porta-johns today) The ones in S.E.A. never contained paper of any sort. Bring your own - paper or leaves.
Saw the public outdoor urinals all over Europe. Usually the open ones were free. The enclosed cost a coin. I say "open" but there was a wall usually. Not tall and not to the ground was normal. Very much like the photo in post #7415.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
They are found all over the world but are common in Asian countries. The true "Squatty Potty"

I've had some greasy pizza in my time, but the time I had Sbarro's, the grease was running down my arm.
