Waiting on my epoxy thickener to arrive in the mail, so I’m sanding and prepping all the detail pieces in between work phone calls and meetings. Once those inwales get glued on I can actually start attaching things.

Sanding and epoxying paddles. Two coats of epoxy plus 4 coats of marine varnish, unless one falls out in the freeway, these things should out last me. They’re not the prettiest, but lightweight, and functional.

nope, dug them out of my parents garage. I remember using them in their old green canoe fiberglass canoe that left glass splinters in your leg every time you got out of it.

Real light and real dry. They’ve got to be 40 years old. That’s why I epoxied them (which is not the prescribed way to finish them). Figured I’d get a few extra years out of them this way.

I made one some time ago using 2X4's, if you can see in the pictures I mitered the edges of the crossmembers so that they would mate up and put screws in them.

The varnish shop is open, finally found a store that sells the ridiculous type of varnish that’s recommended for these things. I thought the second picture was really cool. The left is my ash yoke, cut from a 100+ year old piece of 6/4 former barn header. The right piece is ash for one of the seats I purchased this year, same sanding treatment, same varnish, crazy difference in color. Prior to varnish they looked the exact same.

Epifanes, some crazy Dutch marine varnish, but after this much time and effort I wasn’t going to gamble and throw some other random brand on hoping it works the same.

Step on your home scale without the wood, step on it with the wood. Subtract one from the other. Done! Or do you not have a scale at home?

Yours looks way more solid! I like the idea of the double supported joints in the middle and the top. I actually just screwed mine together last night, just need to the runners mounted on the bottom and then stained.

I don't think I'll work with Texas Cedar again; this stuff cracks if you look at it the wrong way. Will stick to a harder wood for certain next time.

Staining is almost dry, but here is the first pass after 80 grit, before 120.

That looks alot fancier than the one I made. Mine was made to cover with flowers and such so I was not concerned about looks. Nice Job!

I'm sure yours is a lot more stable and built solidly to be quite honest, I am hoping that mine just survives the drive over from my house to our venue!

I appreciate the kind words, I think i need to practice more with clamping just because it's so much more difficult to get those angles to join right. Or at least it was for me.
