2012 Sport DCLB shock question ?

120k now, feeling need for shocks. Sumo springs I added gave a needed 1" lift unloaded. Front a little soft now compared to rear. Thinking of going with 5100s set to 2nd notch in front, and new stock 4600s in the back? Not an off road guy, at least with the truck, so on road ride is the priority. Thanks

 

so are you also trying to reduce the rake of your truck since you added an inch to an already taller rear end? as in make the nose more even with the height of the rear?

 

Yes get rake back to normal, and thinking the 5100s dampening might counter the Sumo springs a little

 

personally id look for a set of 3rd gen Off Road take offs to install on the front. Be a nice ride, and raise the front about an inch. can find them pretty easy and about the same as 5100s

yep. 3rd Gen Tacoma front suspension fits ours, and gives you a little lift when you install the fronts. Make sure its the Off Road ones though. Better springs and shocks. What did you do in the USAF?

 

This is an issue you should be addressing before you start looking at modding or adding more aftermarket stuff.

Sumo springs are not designed to give you lift. If installing them has netted a 1" lift then one of two things is going on:
- Wrong Sumo springs for your application. They're too tall basically.
- Your leaf springs are sagging and should be replaced.

When installed, with factory leaf springs and the bed unloaded there should be a gap between your Sumo spring and the frame. The Sumo spring is designed to engage when you compress the leaf springs, they aren't designed to be engaged 24/7 while the bed is unloaded.

Well I bought the ssr-610-40s. I have a TRD Sport that sits a little lower. So maybe those are not quite right for a Sport?
I'm sure after 9 years my Lear Topper has helped settled the rear leafs some.

Sport uses the same leaf springs as the Off Road and base SR5 4x4 or Prerunner and they are all the same height. The difference between the Sport and Off Road is the shocks which have precisely zero affect on ride height in the rear.

The topper shouldn't be causing an inch of sag so sounds like your springs are just worn and have seen better days. Sumo Springs, unfortunately, are not the correct solution to this problem. The only correct solution is to replace the springs.

 

I'm gonna second what @clenkeit said above. Sounds like your leaf springs are worn out if they are touching your sumo springs. Shouldn't engage unless you have load.

 

even more of a reason to find 3rd gen take offs...I was a flying crew chief most of my career, 26 years.

That's a band aide to WORN out leaf springs. Replace the entire leaf packs.

 

Agreed. With the stock pack being saggy and worn out you're just putting more pressure on the AAL to do all the work. Doesn't make sense. Plus, it's the more expensive option that requires more work to install.

You should be able to find a low mileage, takeoff leaf pack from a 3rd gen for cheap, or possibly even free. Check out your local Craigslist and OfferUp.
