This happened to me after I left my last company. I continued to be paid for about two months. I told them about it immediately, but the checks kept being auto-deposited. Everything got sorted out and I wrote them a check for the full amount. I eventually went back to that same company. I suggest being honest about it, unless you aren't.

Several posters have shared their shock about others' advising the OP to keep the money. In my experience, if people weren't afraid of negative consequences for their actions, people would do a lot more stealing, lying, etc. So I'm pleasantly surprised that so many posters are advising you to do the right thing. Good to know TW membership is comprised mostly of honest people :)

If it were me, I'd tell them about it. I wouldn't like that hanging over my head, but that's just me. <---no longer relevant

    Edit: Good job.

Agree, there is no dilemma here; the money isn't yours, so you tell them.

I don't know why any of the previous posters would have expected to gain anything because you give the money back. You should do it because it's the right thing to do. If the company decides to reward you for it, great, but I don't think that's an expectation.

"The company is probably rich anyway" is a terrible reason. If you think you're underpaid, resolve it by negotiating a raise or starting your own company, not stealing. :D

Props to the OP for telling them.

That is very possible. If anything I would return it just for that reason alone. Everyone makes mistakes, the person in payroll shouldn't lose their job or be forced to pay the money back even if it was their mistake.

    Good call.

I work for a national payroll processing company and mistakes can happen, everyone is human. If your employer has any clue he will catch the error and you will owe the money. Better to be honest like most people here said and tell your employer. They will have more respect for you after and your doing the right thing. Its always nice to find some money but its not yours and your only hurting the employer and your employment if you dont say anything.

Sigh here I go again with one of my traditional against the grain answers.

#1 You should not use that money and notify the bank. If you do not then bank can and will take it out whenever they want often after you charge stuff on your card and to top it off they will slap an overdraft fee for every purchase. It is also a "criminal offense" to use money that is technically not yours.

Having said that there is also a counter argument that most people would deep immoral.

If you stopped at a corner's produce stand and purchased lets say 9 lbs of strawberries for $2/lbs your total would be $18. If you gave that clerk lets say a $50 bill then your change would be $32. Lets say you have not checked your change and went home and 3 days later you were trying to buy something with cash and looked in your wallet and you had 2 20 dollar bills there... what would you do? Would you go back (driving say 20 miles to place where you bought your berries) or would you just use it? How would you react if you found out that you only got 20 bucks in change... would you go back and demand that money or would you pay a "careless and deserve to be punished tax for not paying attention". Now those of us that are moral citizens would obviously want to do the right thing. Unfortunately when it comes to banks they are anything but moral. I had times when bank accidentally processed 1000 dollar deposits as 700 and later sent me a letter that they apologize and that money will be refunded asap.. yes it was... in 3 weeks. On the other hand when they put in too much money into my bank they took it out so fast I did not even have a minute to dial 1800 number and report discrepancy. What is more moral then? Bank taking 3 weeks to refund money or allowing your bank to withdraw from your account whenever the heck they want (even if it was their mistake).

Most of my colleagues have began to cash out their checks and while I am still receiving direct deposit I am very strongly motivated to follow in their footsteps especially with bank of america constantly making all kinds of mistakes.

But yeah anyways... notify the bank and they will take care of the rest.
