Ok. So uncle Sam just gave me the cash. I have a v6 auto, running 285/75/16. With a lot of extra weight on the truck. I also pull a bass boat in the summer and a 4 wheeler in the winter. And towing any one of the two sucks. The truck isn't my DD and sits most of the time. Currently at 15.5 MPG not towing. $2000 will get me 4.88 and a ARB locker. This would help on the towing part and I should be running around 2600rpm at 70, not towing. Should I do this or save the cash? And would my MPG go up if I drive easy.

    Pre runner or 4x4?

You can't regear a 4x4 with an arb for only 2k unless you do all the work yourself.

Sounds like 4.56 would meet your needs.

4x4 and locked in the rear only. 3rd member swap and install myself. I want lower gears for offroad use and also have the ability to tow without my tranny screaming trying to keep a steady speed

If its a DD, 4.10's will get the truck near stock, while the 4.56's will over gear it a bit.

Justed talked to chase. 4.56. Is what I need. 4.88 require a new $400 clamshell. Chris 4x4 it's not a DD.

OK. You talked to them, so I'm guessing you're not forgetting anything:

    Gears (front and rear)
    Install Kit (front and rear)
Labor to build the 3rd member (front and rear - but not to install them in your truck)
    ARB Locker (1)
    ARB Air compressor
Shipping (including returning the original 3rd members)

Anyhow, to the original question - when I regeared my 94 F150 from 3.31 to 4.10 (31" tires) I got a little bit BETTER gas mileage for around town stop and go driving. Not to mention the truck drove better.

I tried (actually did) something very similar with a different vehicle thinking I'd be at about 2500 to 2700 RPM at 65 or so. I went with 4.56 and 32" tires. I ended up turning right around 3K at 65. So I'd just check and recheck the overdrive gear ratio / tire size if I were doing it again. Great on the low end but too tall for highway trips really.
