The Wagoneers are awesome to drive, they appear larger than they really are and are surprisingly nimble, no blind spots either.
I had several that were full time four wheel drive, they would calmly motor through the worst of conditions.

I had an Eagle, they had a viscous coupling in the transfer case that could transfer the power front to rear, it would go in the snow until you started pushing it with the bumper.

Eagles were a nightmare to work on, they had a giant and complex emission system like all early 80's cars. The Fed G'mt was big into designing cars in the 70's-80's shoving regulations down the manufactures throats faster than they could design solutions, the technology just wasn't affordably available yet.

It is a shame that the electronic engine management systems weren't 10 years further advanced at the time. An Eagle with the Chrysler era fuel injected Jeep 4.0, overdrive automatic and 3.55/3.73 gears would be an snappy performer that you could actually work under the hood.

The Eagle was actually a remarkable feat of low cost engineering by AMC. The body dated back to 1969, the Hornet.

The ride height was raised with a (leaf) spring over on the rear axle, a new front cross member/A arms/springs, 15" tires and fender flares. The only body change was a inexpensive revised floor stamping to clear the transfer case.

The car was revolutionary when introduced in 1980. Ford, GM and Chrysler had nothing, only Subaru was in the 4wd car market then and they were much smaller cars -- foreign cars too. Imports didn't have the market segment or the reputation that they have today remember.

My new favorite saying and best title for an album never used

AMC always seemed like a Communist Era car maker to me. The Pacer, Gremlin, Javelin, Eagle all had the vib of a Trabant or Tatra.

My friend had a bright yellow Pacer in HS. It had a three on the tree. Got us around but we called it the ‘Birth Control Car’ for obvious reasons. Sometimes ‘The Terrarium’. (More examples of the good times previously mentioned.)

I hope everyone has a splendid Monday :hattip:.

    Good morning Shane and crew.

Growing up I had a neighbor who was a regional service manager for AMC. His wife had a fully loaded Grand Wagoneer that was an absolute beast. He had an Eagle as a company car for a while, taught me quite a bit about off-road driving in it. I remember it being pretty impressive in the dirt. When AMC began to import them, he had a Renault Fuego turbo too.

New guy isn't fully up to speed yet with knowing his way around so I get to take him and an insurance guy through a couple of buildings today.

Probably still better than ceiling tiles.
