Hey all. I'm new here. Not a Tacoma owner, but I have an RLD Design cap, and I found this thread, which mentions the frozen latches.

I do indeed experience that issue with mine, and found this board while looking for solutions.

Anybody heard of any solutions?

Mine is on my F350. I hunt, fish, etc., and locks freezing on any cap is an issue here in the PNW. I've gotten annoyed with it now that I'm looking for aftermarket solutions to shelter at least the main, rear, locks.

The cap (a topper in my circle) has been good, but this lock freezing business is getting old. I am hoping to use it more for camping too, and I see that others have already found the latches to be a problem for egress from the inside. I haven't been doing that with it though, and I think I'll be able to rig something up if I start to, we'll see.

Thanks for the info.....I just received my RLD cap and install tmrw with some accessories/modifications.....I have Frontrunner Load bars w/ feet and have tracks I was going install first but maybe I can just mount the feet to the existing holes in the cap's rails...? Is that true? Thanks for the help!.....I guess tracks would be nice for adjustability or to mount other accessories as desired...hmmm. Thoughts?

 

Has anyone installed a topper lift on their RLD camper?

Hi I recently bought the camper shell and it came with the factory tracks installed. Where can I find replacement track t-slot nut for it?

 

Some updated pics of how I've been using the cabinet for recovery gear. I've ran it like this for about a year now and am pretty happy with the layout at this point (it's changed a few times). I definitely have an excessive amount of recovery gear, but I put it to use regularly and prefer to be prepared. Most the straps and smaller items are hanging on magnetic hooks, which makes things nice and easier to find/put back. In the cabinet I have: my tool bag, ARB snatch strap, ARB tree strap, ARB snatch block, WARN Winch blanket, 2x ARB Soft shackles, 2x VooDoo Offroad soft shackles, VooDoo off-road kinetic rope, hitch pin, Factor 55 hitch link, wheel chock, mechanics gloves, torque wrench.

 

@Adventure Ready how would you mount a Prinsu Cap rack to and RLD canopy? I saw your pictures earlier in this thread but I was wondering what type of feet are used?

 

Or does anyone here have a Prinsu rack mounted on their RDL? I am waiting on mine to be delivered.

 

You would need to have a track mounted. Despite what you see earlier in the thread stating that you could directly bolt on a Prinsu rack or a Front runner rack. You can directly mount a rack if you want but you would need to drill extra holes and it would probably not line up so well from the bottom part where you would use a washer and a nut if that makes any sense.

After doing much research and calling everyone that sells RLD canopy - Cali raised, off-road alliance, adventure ready and rhino adventure gear within the last two weeks, all of them said the same thing: you need a track to mount a rack. I have tracks on my front runner and I hate that the rack doesn’t line up with the cab rack. I used to have feet on them but it was so high up it was ugly. I had a fabricator create bolts similar to what front runner offers and he made them longer and drilled in to the rack. He used stronger material. Now my canopy rack matches the front. By the way the one that milk tea Tacoma has on is a one off deal that front runner did for him since they sponsor him or whatever. Trust me I bugged the hell out of front runner to give me those mounts and they won’t. Bottom line is I’m happy with my rack lining up and being 2 plus inches lower than before.

 

@Cambodianbreastmilk3187 so basically you drilled holes into the rack and then bolted directly to the canopy with custom fabbed bolts? If I understand you correctly.

 

No, but close. I had these bolts that I highlighted fabricated. These bolts had to be fabricated to fit inside the tracks. So the fabricator created a new one for me.

I asked them to be longer so they can go through the rack. I had the rack drilled so then these bolts would go through.

 

I used the one inch rack feet from prinsu (6 total) to mount the rack on my RLD. Super easy, I've had them on there for over a year now with a Roam XL tent on top and haven't had any issues. I'm currently waiting on a kinsmen awning that i'll have to figure out with the Prinsu setup as well.

 

@_1_YOTA So you bolted it directly to the RLD using these feet?
