I've spent the last 8 years in academia IT...lately, it's far less tech and way more feelings.

I miss the days where IT was in a dungeon and folks left us the fuck alone

Hahahahah just gotta take on all the multi day projects reimaging or networking something new so people will leave you alone. But I feel you. I deal with a ton of "Image quality" which is entirely subjective and have whiny drs complaining about the dumbest things.

I’ve worked in MITS for over a decade. It’s tough but money is pretty good. I too have burned out before and tried other things but IT is always a reliable business to fall back on. @TailHook what do you specialize in?

I moved my office into a server room once. People couldn't stand the fan noises and just left me alone. Miss those days.

I was a network/server guy...ran IT for two local credit unions prior to academia...100% miss it, but seems certs (and the revenue they generate) are all the rage these days in addition to degree(s).

At the director level, I'm just a glorified paper pusher now...without the glory. Money is nice, but I need to be challenged or it gets old fast...and so does working with a bunch of sanctimonious prima donna faculty who think letters after their name means you need to bow to their "greatness" :luvya:

Have you tried introducing yourself back with letters behind your name? "Hi I am Mr. Tailhook GFO" (Go Fuck Off)

Yeah I'm actually struggling myself right now trying to figure out where to go on the career path... I enjoyed my 2 weeks of being a bum but now I gotta find something.

Never in a million years would have imagined myself being really good at industrial/aerospace manufacturing quality but I can do it very well. I don't exactly love it, but I don't hate it either. And I've had people from big industry names say they were impressed with some of the paperwork I submitted.

But I also need something I can disconnect from; not that I wanna be MIA if there's a legit emergency but I would make myself sick when I was running my own business. I would wake up in the middle of the night on a weekend and start to guilt trip myself and worry about jobs that were scheduled for Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday...

Dunno if I go back to the firearms industry either, or what.:boink:

Fuuuuuuck that. I worked in the valley doing this same job for 2 years. I like it up north. Also I dont want to have to be there year round. The older people get the more of them stay in the valley full time instead of going north in the summer. Doctors are plenty busy in the valley in the summer and Im not about that air conditioning life.

Work today asked me a question. I prefaced my answer with " I will answer this in a way, you may not like. Hell, you may fire me. But you'll know where I stand. No, the answer is no because I am not a robot"
They were like its ok, ok. We know just try to get it done tomorrow please.

Like these guys schedule me and another tech for a overnight install at a site 3hrs from each of our houses. Then continue to call us all day Monday, and have us run calls because "emergency". Then wonder why we didnt do X Y Z on Tuesday when we've been been up and working 24hrs.

And asking me this while I'm in a hole in the ground at a station in 100* heat hand pumping out 30gal of water, scraping rust and painting; again because "emergency"

I left IT and went to business side of IT. Totally different world for me but get to use my years of experience.
